AIBU?

To only buy one shape of pasta?

I'm tidying up the kitchen cupboards. There are currently 6 mostly-empty bags, each with a different shape of pasta. WIBU to only ever buy a single shape from now on? And if so, which shape is best? I'm thinking of going for fusilli.

I tend to go for the supermarket own but have been known to buy the value stuff. Might go for naice pasta the next time just to see.

I have a massive soft spot for Radiatore but could never commit to it long term, I just don’t think I’m cut out to be a one pasta woman.

Ah no it's gotta be the cute bow pasta! Or the massive tube ones. My cupboards are full of mix matched pastas- can't mix and match tho

Farfalle, people, it’s called farfalle and they’re not bows, they’re butterflies!

But they have serrated edges Tam - who would do that to a dear little butterfly?

We only buy fusilli and spaghetti

I feel like such a pasta heathen. We usually have linguine plus a shape of some sort (usually fusilli or trottole) but I am totally indiscriminate about what sauce with what type, I clearly have a lot to learn!

I buy the cheapest - it all tastes the same to me. And that usually comes in penne or spaghetti.

I'm afraid YABU, because everyone knows the shells taste best with tomato sauces, and green tagliatelle with peas and pesto. Also, the spirals are horrible.

As a vicarage child it makes me sad we can’t get Strozzapretti - strangled priests - pasta here.

I like little action man bow tie pasta.

YANBU - we buy penne, spirals or spaghetti, that's it. And penne or spirals are just based on which are in the shop, I consider them interchangeable. DS1 gets really excited if I ever buy macaroni because he likes it better apparently but it all tastes the same.

I am however sick of the cheap shit but the expensive stuff doesn't taste nicer enough to justify the extra expense IMO.

So can anyone outline the principles behind picking the right pasta for the right sauce?

I like capellini, penne, fusilli and lasagne.
I am quite picky with the penne. Not particularly to do with price but some feel really heavy. My current favourite is de cocco.
Ds likes penne and occasionally minion shaped.

Grin They are quite easy to make as no egg!

Is the 20p a bag stuff the same as the dearer stuff or is it worth paying the money? We don’t eat pasta often so could afford to splurge if it was worth it!

I am a BIG Waitrose fan but Waitrose pasta is horrible! I usually buy Barilla but it's not expensive here as it's almost always on special offer. I really like De Cecco and Rumma (? - I might have got that wrong) but only when discounted. I currently have some fancy chickpea pasta that I bought on a whim but am scared to use in case it's horrible and ruins the whole meal. Tonight we had passatelli (which isn't even pasta but I think deserves an honourable mention as it's easy to make and is something that all members of the family eat with enthusiasm!)

The really cheap pasta is not nice.

Rumma pasta is lovely, I always stock up when it’s on offer at Sainsbury’s. I think there is a notable difference in taste, as long as you don’t boil it to death.

I mostly use wholemeal penne or spaghetti. That's the bare minimum. I think you're right for most purposes.

Schadenfreude DD informs me comma butterflies have serrated edges. She's a bit of a butterfly geek.

Report

RiverTam · 07/11/2018 22:27

And the word farfalle comes from the Italian (or may actually be the Italian word) for butterfly.

I must be in the minority as I don't like penne! Like twists or ribbons. Sometimes mix pastas if nearly out of one (confuses the hell out of dh but then thats not hard! Grin Love a good pasta conversation! Like the idea of angelhair but apparently it goes cold very quickly.

There's only ONE good use for penne pasta... Grin
