to feel my niece's birthday 'wish list' has given me hope for the future

She's be 11 next Monday and I asked her to email me her 'wish list' so that I could choose something from it.

The list requests:
Pyjamas
A couple of books (named ones that she wants)
A Painting by numbers kit
A new lunch box
A Selection box.

It's the kind of list I could imagine kids drawing up when I was young.

AIBU to be delighted that there are no expensive items, phone accessories, or faddy 'latest must haves' on the list, and to find it quite sweet and uplifting?

Aahhh- my 6 year old wants cardboard to make things with for Christmas ... perhaps he can use the box if the expensive plastic Inaginext toy I bought him!

ShowOfHands · 11/11/2018 05:16

Aww. My DD is a similar age and asks for the same kind of things.

For Christmas last year she wanted a pencil case. This year she wants a calendar and a rug for her bedroom. She provides a detailed list of books she wants to family members and adds "plus socks and new vests" on the end.

It's a marked contrast to 7yo DS who wants many, many things.

Your niece sounds lovely Op!
DS5 has asked for a long armed stapler (he likes to draw comics and wants to put them together properly)
DS2 would like a Lego figure like his brother collects (a little lego blind bag)
So that’s my Christmas shopping sorted for less than a tenner!

Mishappening · 11/11/2018 10:07

I asked my 7 year old GS what he might like for Christmas and he said "A bunch of flowers" - how cute is that? Smile

My ds asked for a pair of scissors when he was 4.... It was all he wanted. Of course we bought other things too but the first thing he opened was the scissors so then he didn't want to open anything else....until we suggested he used the scissors to open the other presents...he was hooked. He actually blunted them within a couple of months and he was so upset.

Aww some of these are adorable. My DS(4) also had a very modest Christmas request - a new cupholder for his car seat to replace the one he lost. Sadly they were out of stock everywhere but the amazing @crashingthunderandlove has saved the day and is posting us theirs, so that’s going to make him a very happy boy.

He has since also asked for ‘a book, a Christmas book, and a new food bowl’ which we will happily provide. Then he asked for a real cement mixer, and I’ve had to gently explain that Santa doesn’t tend to supply large items of machinery Hmm.

7yo DS also asks for "real snow" every year. Earlier this year when it snowed, he danced around the house shouting "thank you Father Christmas". He's already asked me 748 times if it will snow this winter.

Insertwitticishere6 is it the Hot Potato? That's a squashy potato with a face that has a timer inside and you throw around to other people, the one who's holding it when it explodes loses (or wins!)

buckeejit · 11/11/2018 15:40

Wow, that sounds good. I want hot potato!

Ds just turned 9 can't think of anything he wants apart from a treehouse, while dd 5 who finished her book/letter to Santa has been talking about what she 'ordered' from Santa, including a my little pony white chocolate Easter egg!

Tiredmum100 · 11/11/2018 15:43

My ds is 7 next month. He's asked for some colouring pencils and some plain paper. Bless him.

amilosingitor · 11/11/2018 15:49

My son once asked for a golden diplodocus and after trying my hardest and spray painting a few he said the night before his birthday "actually mummy I want all yellow presents" - fml.

@Mishappening that's so sweet and last year my DD asked Father Christmas for a purple and a pink felt tip pen because hers had run out

Exhaustedmummy1811 · 11/11/2018 17:44

Earlier this year my dd who is 4 asked if santa could bring her a baby brother or sister, surprisingly she is getting one but may be disappointed as it won't arrive until April lol
