AIBU?
Food bores on Instagram / social media
Esker · 06/11/2018 20:44
Numerous behaviours to critique here. AIBU to hate (and to sort of enjoy hating) the following:
People posting pics of food in general. Ok maybe the very occasional picture is fine, but I'm talking about repeat offenders here.
Overuse of millions of food hashtags especially stomach-churning ones like #foodgasm, #foodporn and #heresmyfood
Use of onomatopoeia to approximate noises made when enjoying food eg nom nom
Wannabe foodie influencers trying to tell you how to make the thing in their picture, getting all arty with the photography, and trying to engage you with questions at the end like 'How do you get your #fiveaday?'
Yes, you could tell me to unfollow, but my enjoyment of eye-rolling forbids it.
AIBU to think that the above described things are extremely dull?
NotUmbongoUnchained · 06/11/2018 20:48
It’s dull if you don’t like food.
I’d find an Instagram full of dog pictures incredibly dull but other people would love it.
NoMudNoLotus · 06/11/2018 20:51
I agree @Esker .
Why people think im even remotely interested in what is on their plate i dont know.
The likes of FB and Instagram have created a generation of narcissists.
SaucyJack · 06/11/2018 20:53
Are these dedicated foodie accounts you’re following?
You’ve only got yourself to blame tbh.

I'm 23 and it seems obligatory amongst my peers, I haven't been out for a meal or drinks in years without everything being photographed and uploaded to Instagram immediately. 'Stories' on Instagram have made it worse as it means posting millions of food shots doesn't clog up your normal feed.
theworldistoosmall · 06/11/2018 20:57
I follow one 'foodie'. He has many sides to him and those that know him personally know about his passions.
Those that post about one thing, I don't follow them. Cannot be arsed with their dullness. Even the eateries I follow post more than just food.
Esker · 06/11/2018 21:15
@SaucyJack No! Just regular people who find their salad / roast dinner / brunch fascinating.
I am guilty of following one specific foodie account. An old/ distant school friend who seems intent on setting herself up as a sort of Deliciously Ella style person. The naval gazing is phenomenal!

I work for a company, that does a content creation on social media, food is always insanely popular, for a lot of stuff on sm I don't really get it but for the food ones I could scroll through for hours, but then I love browsing through cookbook pics, so kind of the same thing!
Esker · 06/11/2018 21:43
Interesting @Pikanudu . I also enjoy browsing cookbooks, online recipes and so on. It's not that I don't like food. I guess what I'm really complaining about is the way that lots of people seem to pile on to what they see professionals doing, and seem to think that their stack of pancakes with drizzled syrup is somehow newsworthy
Pikanudu · 06/11/2018 21:50
I mean that's the whole point of sm I guess to be very self absorbed and fake! Not much on their is news worthy, but it could be interesting to their group or followers and if people aren't interested they can u follow.
I don't do personal posting on social media at all as work has put me off it! But I suppose the good thing is it allows people to follow a niche, I could scroll for hours through pics on IG of Japanese peoples packed lunches, maybe there's people scrolling through Janet from accounts mashed potato with drizzled gravy and loving it!
Esker · 06/11/2018 22:17
True! I have only myself to blame 😔 But I'm just an inveterate grump who likes to have a good moan. Also, I'm still feeling queasy from a recent bug - dinner this evening was 2 packets of crisps - so I think all food related content on social media has been particularly offputting today 😷
