To not let 'meter reader' in ...

Just had a man come round to read the meter, he had ID but no idea if thats legit though

He was contracted out by EDF, British Gas etc so didn't know who my supplier was and his van was parked 'round the corner' and he walked down.

I'm sure it was fine but with alone with a baby in the house, I just wasn't comfortable letting him in!! Highly unlikely that he was dodgy I know

AIBU or should I have let him in?! (I have let others in before but always feel vulnerable)

Wy do people not like smart meters? We have had ours for about a year and we know we aren't being overcharged.

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 06/11/2018 23:08

I never let them in, male / female / unicorn they don't get through the door because my house is a shit tip I just write it down for them and they fill the card in themselves so they don't have a wasted trip.

Mummaloves · 06/11/2018 23:29

I never let them in when they turn up unannounced as my gas meter is in the very back of my cupboard under the stairs, which takes about 20 minutes for me to empty out to get to the meter !!

I won’t have a smart meter since a man at work told me the effects they can have on people - headaches, nausea, fatigue etc.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 07/11/2018 09:10

I always seem to be in an annoyed mood when they turn up (which does nothing to improve the situation). They seem to have a habit of arrriving at the most inconvenient times too. Plus the cat litter tray is under the stairs (in the cupboard) where the electricity meter is, so I'm always embarrassed to have to show them to it...

I don't understand this mentality, let the bloke do his job! He had ID.

A company I work with have to force entry to some houses (social housing) because people won't let them in to do Gas Safety checks and service the boiler.

HeronLanyon · 07/11/2018 09:21

But ID can be knocked up in two ticks by anyone. It shouldn’t be a surprise that people are not comfortable letting strangers with no appointment into their house. It’s called artifice burglary. It’s really common often where person tricked by false story or docs is elderly, or alone in house etc. I gladly let people in my house where they have an appointment which I have sorted out with whatever company it is.

bobstersmum · 07/11/2018 09:58

I never let them in if dh not here. Its not silly. It's very sensible.

Dizzywizz · 07/11/2018 12:53

@mummaloves - there shouldnt be be stuff all around the gas meter. That is dangerous and a fire risk.

thecapitalsunited · 07/11/2018 18:25

I’m not sure about gas meters but I do know that the electric smart meters can be inaccurate. The old style ones with the spinning disk were very accurate measures of the power used but the new style don’t work the same way and can get confused by things like energy saving lights and dimmer switches for some physics reason I don’t understand beyond that it distorts the current.

smackbangwhollop · 17/11/2018 21:37

I have NEVER let anyone in my house without a confirmed appointment. I just tell them that. In fact I don't even open the door unless im actually expecting a guest Bear. I don't care if it just takes a minute. I'm very capable of taking a meter reading myself and sending it in on my online account. I also take a picture of the reading for my own records.
