Anyone had any positive experience from sending child to therapy?

Hi All

Not sure if this was the right place to post but it seems to be the most active forum so thought I'd post here.

Me and DH are sending our DS (7) to child therapy and I just wondered if any other parents/guardians had any experience of doing the same.

Stuff's happened in the past year , there's been lots of change and we just feel it would really help. I often hear "oh kids are so resilient" but from my own experience that resilience doesn't last forever hence our decision to seek help. I'm still in therapy and have been for a year consistently but have also had numerous counselling sessions and a period of CBT around 2012 for incidents that occured when I was growing up surrounding families etc and its helped me massively. This is the longest I have been having my CBT sessions and they have helped me so much in ways I never thought was possible but I also wish I would've had them sooner which is why we've decided to send our DS to similar sessions.

Has anyone else's child/children been to similar sessions and has it helped?

Yes, my daughter had counselling (not the same as therapy but along the same lines). She found it great - really helpful - age 12/13. Probably going to have some ‘top up’ sessions again soon. I Recommend - also if first one does not gel for your child try another. Good luck x

My DS had art therapy when he was 6 and it really helped him. He’s much happier and content now and is able to regulate his emotions / express when he’s struggling.

DS1 is 13 and has had several bouts of play therapy at different times. It's been an absolute godsend for him over the years and if he seems ready for another session at any time I won't hesitate to get him booked in again.

It sounds slightly odd to admit but as his Mum I felt almost as though I was failing him, that he would need someone outside of our sphere to work things through with, but looking back it was absolutely what he needed.

Absolutely in favour of this. My son's on the therapy / CBT waiting list via our NHS Trust, and had counselling last year which helped. The trust's early intervention team 121 sessions have been invaluable as well. Any resilience tools we can give our kids, we should. I'd say it's us as parents being strong, not weak, so don't worry @Idontbelieveinthemoon... It's all about wellbeing and we're all just adding that little bit of support where possible.

Yes, drama therapy. He was 10. Very, very helpful.
