40th party

Icantfindausername · 05/11/2018 21:07

I'm trying to decide whether to have a 49th birthday but I've added up the cost and it will be about £1k minimum for the kind of celebration I would want. Is that silly to spend on a party or reasonable?
Thanks

Did you can afford it go for it. I would never spend that sort of money in a party, I would go on holiday! But if thats your thing why not!

SpookyTeaBag · 05/11/2018 21:56

Blimey! 1k Shock :)

Rainagain1 · 05/11/2018 22:03

We spent probably bit more than than on DH 40th and it was well worth it. Was a lovely night catching up with friends.

HundredMilesAnHour · 05/11/2018 22:06

If you can afford it, go for it.

A friend recently spent $12,000 on his 50th birthday - and that was just on dinner and drinks for 16 people. Didn't include hotel bills or flights. So £1k seems pretty reasonable by comparison. Wink

If you’ve got the money , do it

It’s what life is all about :)

DroningOn · 05/11/2018 22:09

Can't take it with you...

rainbowquack · 05/11/2018 22:13

I just had my fortieth and it cost 3.5k. I saved up for two years. It was wonderful, one of the best nights of my life and everything I wanted. All of my friends said that they had an amazing time as well.

triwarrior · 05/11/2018 22:16

I had a big 40th birthday party and it was terrific. Hired a Beatles cover band, full buffet, etc. Worth every penny. Do it - and enjoy!

Racecardriver · 05/11/2018 22:17

£1k isn’t very much for a party. If you will actually enjoy it then go for it.

KC225 · 05/11/2018 22:19

I had the worst 40th birthday. So do it - in the great scheme of things, its only money. If you have to steal or go into debt for it, do it.

LagunaBubbles · 05/11/2018 22:21

We spent about 2 grand in DHs 40th, but it was worth every penny. It was a dress up party and costs just added up, didnt set out to spend that! We didnt need to spend £50 on a Captain Hook cardboard cut out either but we did!

HeddaGarbled · 05/11/2018 22:22

Can you afford it and would enough people come?

Furrydogmum · 05/11/2018 22:24

It is worth whatever it is worth to you that you can afford.. My 40th came at a flat point in my life and my dsis and dm pulled together a get together that cost minus peanuts in comparison to £1k but was exactly what I needed at that point.
Do what works for you and enjoy it.

garethsouthgatesmrs · 05/11/2018 22:27

assuming you have the money why not? I love a big party and will spend that on mine if I can. I probably can't

SushiMonster · 05/11/2018 22:28

If you can afford it, go for it.

QueenOfMyWorld · 05/11/2018 22:29

We are going on a holiday costing £5 grand for our joint 40ths.Its a big milestone, got for it!

BackforGood · 05/11/2018 22:41

I agree with everyone else. Totally depends on your circumstances.
Overall though if you have the money and can afford it, then do it.

HildaZelda · 05/11/2018 22:45

If you can afford it and it's what you really want to do then go for it.
I'm 40 next year but I don't want a party. I'd prefer just myself and DH to go away somewhere instead.
I have warned him that a surprise party would result in instant divorce!

Icantfindausername · 05/11/2018 22:56

Thanks all i think I am going to go for it. I've never had a big party - got about 120 on the list (not all will come I know that) but should be fun. I fancy a band which is £400 but I'm like eeek! Is that silly to pay?

My hubby is 40 the year after so going to go away just the 2 of us for his birthday.

I would freak at a surprise party but I'm ok with planning one lol xx

DH and I have our birthdays in the same month so we had a joint 40th and threw a party. A hundred guests, food, drink, a live band and a fabulous cake. It was an absolutely fantastic night.

Lots of friends and family travelled to join us and it was worth every single penny.

Our budget was similar to yours but we haven’t had a party since our joint 21st so we thought it was probably time. Grin

Of course we could have done something lovely for less money but it was lots of fun and it meant a lot to celebrate with all our friends and family.

We enjoyed it so much we’ll definitely have another one for our 50th.
