Doesn’t everyone aspire to own a house?

Is it just me? I thought everyone aspired to own a home in their lifetime.

I know that it’s a luxury many of my generation will not have.

Currently trying to understand why someone who has the ability would not take it

I am in the SE and we had to move eight times in nine years, also had lots of rent increases and poor maintenance. Social housing is much more secure, I thought this thread was more about private renting.

Because they see a house as a liability and can invest in income/growth producing assets like stocks, and liquidate at will.

I’ve nearly paid my mortgage off so the bank taking it is very unlikely. As for paying for my care in old age, fair enough, someone has to pay for it. Short term I can understand renting if you don’t want any commitments but once you have children, to be able to give them a stable home to me, is so important. My son is 27 and still lives at home. I’m so glad I can provide a roof over his head.

Three times our home has been sold from under us
