AIBU to cook beef mince that expired last Friday?

Probably not technically an AIBU, but posting here for traffic and a (hopefully) quick response!

I’m cooking a chilli con carne tonight for DH and me, using half a packet of beef mince. It was opened on Thursday, when I used half the mince and stored the rest in the fridge. The use by date was Friday November 2nd.

AIBU to now be using the remainder in a chilli? I was loathe to throw it away, as money is tight at the moment and I can’t stand wasting things. I will be boiling the hell out of it for 45 mins or so.

Would you eat it or bin it?

Depends how it smells. I'm usually pretty relaxed but I would be pretty wary if it was opened on the thursday

Ilovehamabeads · 05/11/2018 19:43

I’d sniff it. You can smell off mince straight away.

Dottysmum18 · 05/11/2018 19:44

You would be able to tell from the smell and look it may be a little brown but as long as well cooked should be fine I think people are too pedantic when it comes to food and it lends itself to waste

DramaAlpaca · 05/11/2018 19:44

Sniff it. You'll soon know if it's off. If it smells OK I'd eat it.

NoSquirrels · 05/11/2018 19:44

Won’t it be pretty grey and a bit whiffy?

I wouldn’t, because mince had a greater surface area exposed to nasties so I’d avoid.

MacosieAsunter · 05/11/2018 19:44

Missing the point - why would you be boiling chili con carne for 45 mins ?

If it smells fine, it will be fine.

coolwalking · 05/11/2018 19:45

trust your nose and also the colour

Wellonlyifihaveto · 05/11/2018 19:45

I would personally bin it, but I’ve had food poisoning from off meat before Sad
Does it smell/discoloured? If it looks ok and you’ve got cast iron stomachs go for it!

MyGirlDaisy · 05/11/2018 19:46

Sorry but I would bin it I don’t think it’s worth taking the risk .

daffodillament · 05/11/2018 19:47

If its been in the fridge and still nice and pink it should be fine cooked through. I always worry but family think I'm bonkers and they are always right ! Enjoy your chilli !

siakcaci · 05/11/2018 19:49

I simmer my chilli for a good 3 hours, I would absolutely not use that out of date mince though.

JaiNotJay · 05/11/2018 19:49

I wouldn't cook it and I'm normally quite relaxed about use by dates.

TheFairyCaravan · 05/11/2018 19:50

I'd bin it. I couldn't take the risk.

tryingtosortmylifeout · 05/11/2018 19:50

It was still pink and did smell ok but also had a “less than 100% fresh” smell IYSWIM. It didn’t smell off either though, and wasn’t a grey/brown colour.

Well if you cook it, you'd probably save a lot of money on food for the next 5 days but the extra bog rolls needed might cancel out the savings.

dustarr73 · 05/11/2018 19:51

If it hadnt been opened Thursday i would use it,But its been opened n the fridge.Door being opened numerous times.I wouldnt risk it.

apostropheuse · 05/11/2018 19:51

I wouldn't eat it.

RedneckStumpy · 05/11/2018 19:51

Trust your nose, not the dates. Besides chilli spice will cover up any off taste!

Shoobydooby09 · 05/11/2018 19:53

If it hadn't had been opened I think you would have been ok. However, I think you will be able to smell it if it has gone off. If it smells ok it should be ok. Also if it's turned the grey/ greeny colour that mince can I would bin it. I wouldn't personally if it's been open since Thursday.

FermatsTheorem · 05/11/2018 19:54

Mince - no way. Massive surface area, bugs just love it. Still, like a PP said, if you've got enough bog rolls stockpiled...

tryingtosortmylifeout · 05/11/2018 19:54

Just had a spoonful from the pan and it tastes fine. Is that any indication of whether or not it’s off, or not really?

For the dog, maybe. Smell depending.

DaphneFanshaw · 05/11/2018 19:55

I wouldn’t no.

Candlelights2345 · 05/11/2018 19:55

I think it’s too old if it’s been opened since Thursday, And dated Friday. No point in having food poisoning for the sake of a couple of £’s.

CallMeRachel · 05/11/2018 19:56

I just cooked Grey/Brown coloured mince for tea tonight opened today with tomorrow's date on it.

I don't think you can go by colour alone, possibly smell.

Personally if it's been open since Thursday and it's 3 days past it's date I wouldn't risk it. Food poisoning is awful and not worth £3 imo
