To have no idea whatsoever what I can buy dd2 for Christmas?

Dd1 (14) is easy to buy for, she is really into clothes and helpfully sends me about a million links to stuff she wants.

Dd2 (8) on the other hand, I literally have no idea. She’s gone past that age of playing with plastic toys, and I’m currently in the process of ridding the house of all the needless shite that never gets played with. But she’s not really moved onto the next stage of being into fashion etc so it’s an awkward inbetweeny age.

She is really into playing on the iPad, but she got a new one for her birthday. Her bedroom is tiny (very small box room), and there really isn’t room for much in there. She does hobbies/activities (horse riding and majorettes), but there’s nothing she needs for either of those things.

To complicate matters further, she still believes in Santa, and I have created a rod for my own back here by buying too much stuff for her in previous years. So if she comes down to hardly any presents on Christmas Day, it will be difficult to explain. However, this year the thought of another avalanche of shite coming into the house fills me with horror. It’s not good for my sanity, or the environment. And she will never actually play with any of it.

WWYD?

At that age I got DD a massive cuddly toy to go in her bed.

It took up so much space in the pile that it kinda hid the fact that there wasn’t as much there Grin

belleandsnowwhite · 05/11/2018 21:13

A Polaroid camera.

Shuggas · 05/11/2018 21:21

Is she arty? You can get nice smart sets, a microwave cuddle toy went down a storm with my DD , you can get some really nice ones, second bath bombs and the like, does she like music? A subscription for Spotify?

yummumto3girls · 05/11/2018 21:33

We have just bought DD3 a Polaroid instant camera (can’t remember name but does digital and prints them from the camera) she loved it and is now copying her bigger sister by hanging them from fairy lights with built in clips John Lewis!)

I agree with you, after 3 DD’s I am refusing to buy any more tat!

She loved her bath bomb kits, bath bombs from Lush etc

Other ideas: various musical instruments, clothes, heelies, roller skates, drone, craft kits (scrapbook type stuff). It’s a difficult age so also reading for inspiration!

Again thank you so much for the ideas, there are some really fantastic ones that I think she’d love. Will look into the Polaroid camera, think that could be good (her big sister would probably like one too). And I have lots of lovely photos of her pony and her over the years so it would be nice to get some pics printed and put them in a frame as she’s greatly missed.

What about one of those door frame monkey gym things, you can get swing attachment, pull up rings, rope ladders etc

AM Photographics (on Facebook ) does wonderful pictures of horses or other pets - colour or monochrome, single photos or a collage, as drawings or sketches - from your photos. I'm not sure how much notice is needed to get one before Christmas but I'm thinking of getting one for my DD. I haven't used them or seen the work first hand so this is not a personal recommendation, just an idea as the pictures look fab.

If you are thinking of hitting Claire’s, I recommend going through Topcashback. Between the sale on at Claire’s, a voucher code from Topcashback and the cash back itself, I got £32 of stuff for DSD7 for £12 before I even got out of bed on Sunday morning Wink some really nice bits too - hair bows, earrings and one of the fluffy character locking secret diaries. DSD LOVES to be in on a wee secret so that will probably be her favourite!

It is hard to bulk up at that age. My DD is 9 still believes and loves unicorns, I got her a large soft toy unicorn, unicorn house coat, slippers, etc.

A few of those science and slime sets along with iPod a vanity case and a jewellery box.

Yonijust · 06/11/2018 05:59

You are right to think about the environment. Nobody wants a house full of plastic.

How about a cinema pass or similar?
