When you pay for something - you have bought it
When you carry something - you have brought it.
Is is really that hard to get them right?

PinkMartini · 18/06/2007 18:31

Well then squonk, I guess you say whichever has the most importance.
I brought it all the way home.
I bought it at .
It's the people who say I brought this top at shopname that make me see red.

I hate should of when it is should have

ChasingSquirrels · 18/06/2007 18:32

is this written or verbal? regional variations / accents may be a problem here?

choosyfloosy · 18/06/2007 18:33

Direct quote from CV recently submitted to me:

'I wish I never had of left this job as it was brilliant.'

For a secretarial job.

Into the round file I'm afraid.

handlemecarefully · 18/06/2007 18:33

Well, I think you might need to get a little perspective if it genuinely makes you see red

PinkMartini · 18/06/2007 18:36

HMC you are so right.

Dh drives me mad because he always says "I borrowed it to him" (instead of lent it).

I used to go on and on about it to him, then I found out that in his first language(Welsh), they use the same word for both, so he isn't quite as ignorant as I thought.

redtoenails · 18/06/2007 19:06

never heard anyone mistake brought and bought - is it regional?

PinkMartini · 18/06/2007 20:24

Don't think so.

margoandjerry · 18/06/2007 20:31

Ooohhh bought and brought. That is super-annoying. I hear it a lot (London)

And agree on "I could of..." - disastrous.

Our very nice and intelligent HR person at work says "I come into work at the weekend and I done loads of work". It makes me DEMENTED.

Also incorrect use of yourself as in "any drinks for yourself, madam" as much used by air hostesses.

mylittlefreya · 18/06/2007 20:43

'Lend' and 'borrow' is regional I thought - but I do still find it very annoying. But then I'm a bit of a grammar-Nazi.

anotheranonname · 18/06/2007 20:56

Try working in an accounts dept of a retail store.

"Brought ledger dept" .

Ripeberry · 18/06/2007 21:35

Try asking a Bristolian to say Idea, they always say Ideal, just seems very hard for them to just say Idea.

Off-topic I know, but I had visions of reading a thread hotly debating Blue Peter 'bring and buy sale' disaster stories >_<

Agnes

Rachmumoftwo · 18/06/2007 21:42

Me too. I thought it was going to be about a Blue Peter sale shop lifter!

bananabump · 18/06/2007 21:49

I get pissed off when people say volumptuous instead of voluptuous, or pompadom instead of poppadom. Brought/bought annoys me too! As does "can you borrow me a tenner?"

No, but I can lend you one...

stressteddy · 18/06/2007 21:50

We was talking yesterday......

aarrgghh!

somersetmum · 18/06/2007 21:55

"I'm looking for a pacific one" - go and look in the ocean then

ELF1981 · 18/06/2007 21:55

I hate people picking up on words I have said wrongly. I suffered several years of speech therapy so I find it an achievement when I can string a sentence together in the first place.

Wotz · 18/06/2007 21:58

but alot just say ' I bowt' for both!

Stroo · 18/06/2007 22:25

I hate it when people / adverts miss out the 'to' in sentences. i.e. Helps contain doodahs' or 'helps neutrilise flams' etc.

Where's the to?

Where's the to???????
