Miele dishwasher - repair or replace?

We've just moved house and have inherited an integrated Miele dishwasher, model G1173 Vi. I don't know how old it is. The kitchen was extended in 2003, so it could be as much as 15 years old, or a lot newer.

The fault indicators are that there is a leak somewhere, because the pump keeps running even though the dishwasher is switched off. I've called a local appliance guy and he says nobody does independent repairs of Miele dishwashers because the parts are so expensive. The Miele callout charge is likely to be £150+, and that's before parts etc.

In the meantime I could just get a new "value for money" machine for < £400ish that would be a lot more repairable.

Any thoughts on whether it's worth getting Miele in to fix the problem?

Tbh, I think if it was mine I'd be looking to replace.

I love Miele stuff - all our white goods are Miele except for the Hotpoint cooker which I hate and would replace if money were no object, and the dishwasher which is also a Hotpoint but currently working all right. But your dishwasher is somewhat elderly and chances are, even if you sort the current problem at ££££, you will no doubt have something else going wrong within a shorter timeframe than you would hope.

Also integrated appliances are awkward to get at for repair, I wouldn't want to be doing that too often...

So sorry, but I'd be calling it a day. Poor dishwasher!

PurpleCrazyHorse · 05/11/2018 12:09

Miele parts are expensive that's why we have a 10 year guarantee on our washer dryer. I wouldn't risk an expensive repair if I didn't know the appliance history.

We bought a cheap Beko dishwasher which died after 23 months. We did get a full refund after a bit of toing and froing. We replaced it with a Whirlpool, which is brilliant.

MrsMarigold · 05/11/2018 12:21

We had a Miele dishwasher and tbh it wasn't great, the layout was good but it wasn't the best at cleaning, it broke we contemplated repairing it and decided against it we bought a which best buy for a fraction of the price and it's much better.

I had the same fault with our inherited Miele dishwasher. In our case the problem had been caused by a little blockage in the filter, a teeny bit of water had drained into the collection tray under the machine triggering the WaterSafe system (or whatever it's called). I was able to get a non-Miele engineer out but, in fact, throughly cleaning the filter and leaving the machine to dry out for a few days would have solved it too. So, I'd give that a try before you give up.

On my machine there's a faffy little part beside the obvious filter that needed clicking out and cleaning. It'd be worth downloading the manual and trying.

Replace (not with a Miele). Who wants stuff to last 20 years anyway?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 05/11/2018 12:36

I’ve had Miele products for years and they often come with a special offer of a ten year guarantee (all my current white goods have one) so feel they’re worth it. I’ve found the few occasions I’ve had to deal with them, Miele customer service have been brilliant. As you don’t k ow for sure how old it is, it might be worth giving Miele a call, if you know the model number and can find the serial number (usually on the door edge) they’ll be able to tell you if it’s still got cover on it or at least how old it is.

Ariela · 05/11/2018 12:37

Definitely worth getting Miele in, their machines are very good and generally last for years - mines 20 years old my Dad's more than double that.

pickingdaisies · 05/11/2018 12:38

Mrsgollach, anyone with any sense! We had a Miele from new, first time it went wrong it was covered by service plan, head everything replaced on it, it lasted another 18 months. Second time we bought a new one. They are really expensive to repair. You have to assume that callout plus parts will cost about £400. But get on YouTube and you'll find lots of advice on cleaning and checking the gubbins yourself first.

MrsGollach · 05/11/2018 13:08

Technology is changing all the time. Personally I'd rather pay £500 for a Bosch that may last 8 years then change it, rather than at least twice that price and it last "forever"

Whitecurrants · 05/11/2018 13:15

Replace. We have a Miele dishwasher and it's gone wrong more than any other white goods item in our house. I wouldn't pay for an expensive repair when you don't know the history. On the other hand, it's worth clearing the filter and pump and drying the bottom of the cabinet where the overflow float is, just in case the problem is easy to solve and you don't need an engineer.

coldandalone · 05/11/2018 14:19

Judas thanks for that advice. I rang Miele and now know that the dishwasher is 8 years old, not 15. That does make the decision a bit harder.

I have just replaced my nine year old Miele with a £450 Smeg. The Smeg cleans better, quicker and uses less water. I was looking at about £400 bill to repair the Miele. My new dishwasher has a 5 year guarantee.

coldandalone · 05/11/2018 14:50

Thanks soontobe6. Which Smeg model did you get and where from?

OP posts:
pickingdaisies · 05/11/2018 16:55

Forgot to say our new replacement was NOT a Miele. They are now way too expensive. I don't love it like I did the Miele, but that only lasted 7 years anyway. Our new one is a Neff. I liked the look of the Smegs though. Seriously OP, if you can't fix it yourselves, replace it.

HalfManHalfMamil · 02/01/2019 21:41

Coldandalone, did you go for a Miele callout in the end and if so, how much did the repair cost? I have exactly the same model Dishwasher as you and it has just developed exactly the same problem! Mine is around 11 years old, but owned from new and has been problem free to date, so I'm loath to bin it.

QuitMoaning · 02/01/2019 21:47

There is an independent Miele repairer in Bedfordshire. We live in Hertfordshire and use them.

coldandalone · 02/01/2019 22:03

HalfManHalfMamil, no, I replaced it in the end. I phoned and asked about the Miele callout charge and from memory it was something like £130 for the first hour, then more for (expensive) parts and time after that, but it's worth checking directly to be sure.

OP posts:
HalfManHalfMamil · 02/01/2019 23:11

Coldandalone, thanks for the swift reply. Yes £130 minimum sounds about right from what I've read, but it's the possibility of also needing expensive parts that is pushing me reluctantly towards replacement.
QuitMoaning, I'm in West Sussex, so I'll check if there is an independent Miele repairer locally. I didn't know they existed.

lottieheaven · 14/11/2019 08:44

thoughtd Id add an update, our 11 year miele dishwasher has just started tripping the electrics. Called miele and now they have a couple of options if you are out of warranty, £130 call out for an hours with extra on top or £250 all in to repair or if its beyond economic repair the £250 you can use towards a new dishwasher - Ive chosen this option as I will get another Miele.....looking at my original invoice and prices of new machines that seem to have the same buttons as my old one the prices are the same...how does that work.........mind you the soonest an engineer can come out is two weeks so this is bad
