DS is 15 and in his GCSE year.
He has SEN and struggles quite a bit but is getting good support.
He also struggles with speaking out in class and was previously selective mute. He has various diagnoses including significant difficulty with understanding language, processing and writing.
He has been put on report for progress, not behaviour.
In order to not get detention each night he has to complete his work and extension work, various other things I can't remember and ask questions in class.
Sometimes he barely finishes his actual work not because he's messing about but because he has huge issues with processing , language and writing. Asking questions in front of others is also a huge issue.
I'm all for encouraging but I'm worried punishing him will disengage him further from the education system than he already is. We've just got passed school refusal.
In addition to this we love some distance from school and have an agreement with school that he is not to stay late as ends up waiting a significant time alone for the next one. (he's considered vulnerable) but now they are going against this too.
I'm torn because if he needs to be on report I don't want to give him a free pass but...
