WIBU to park in a disabled space?

FairfaxAikman · 05/11/2018 07:13

Ordinarily I wouldn't dream of it.

Our local supermarket closes off half the car park with barriers overnight to deter boy racers. It doesn't reopen until after 8am. ALL of the parent and child spaces are in the closed off side.

DS is still small enough to be in his car seat. In the past if I've arrived before 8am I've parked in a normal space but every time I've ended up with someone next to me, making it hard to get DS back in.

There is a row of 10 disabled spaces, all empty. WIBU to park in the furthest one from the shop?

Fairfax. Because I assume they have provided more than the legal minimum which is great.

It also means it won’t be an issue for the supermarket to swap two over as per your suggestion as they’ll still have more than the legal minimum.

Has this theoretical pregnant woman on the train paid for a first class ticket? If not, then why should she be entitled to all the first class benefits just because she opened her legs and didn’t use protection? Being pregnant isn’t a free ‘upgrade your life card’ - it doesn’t mean the woman should simply just be allowed into first class without buying an appropriate ticket.

Hannnnnnnxo, I love the phrase "upgrade your life card".

Unfortunately, after reading the same thread over and over on MN, I've come to believe that P&C parking spaces should be done away with. I don't think they actually help parents - they've just fostered a form of learned helplessness. It's also given many people the impression that having a child is on a par with having a disability - look at all the threads on here where people compare childless people parking in a C&P space to able-bodied people parking in a disabled space.

Samcro · 06/11/2018 14:39

well so the op is still wanting to change 2 of the BB to P&c . wow.
I really feel sorry for parents whose lives are so hard with their able bodied children. its so much easier being disabled or having a disabled child (not)

Dorsetdays · 06/11/2018 14:42

Samcro. No you’re wrong. Half the BB parking and ALL P&C parking is cordoned off before 8am. The OP simply suggested swapping over two spaces to enable both parking before 8am. Not taking any away overall and all parking would be available from 8am anyway.

Not sure why that’s so hard to understand.

Sleeplikeasloth · 06/11/2018 14:49

FairfaxAikman, it's based on the amount of spaces overall. Where I live, the supermarkets have double the minimum, hence lots of disabled spaces are usually free.

Even if they only provide the legal minimum, if half the car park is shut, then the minimum required BB spaces would also fall by half.

HiHoToffee · 06/11/2018 14:57

But there is no need to enable p&c bays when there is normal parking available. OP has options, maybe inconvenient options but she has options.

GPs shouldn't give antibiotics for tonsillitis because some people have TB.

Well actually, most cases of tonsillitis are viral so are best off not treated with antibiotics. Widesprrad antibiotic use is a massive problem because it has led to the development of Munro drug resistant TB. One does indirectly affect the other.

PurpleDaisies · 06/11/2018 15:01

That should say multi drug resistant tb.

PurpleDaisies · 06/11/2018 15:03

But ideally we'd have both!

Ideally p and c spaces would be renamed accessible spaces do anyone with a need for a wider space (broken leg, pregnant, poor mobility but not bad enough for a B.B. etc) could use them.

Purple. I agree they should be ‘accessible’ spaces for multi use and actually in my area some places have started doing exactly that so hopefully that will continue to grow.

BishBoshBashBop · 06/11/2018 15:08

OK purple. You win. Let's just take away all p&c spaces. In fact maybe we should just make all parking spaces BB. Every other fecker can walk!

FFS its not aboit people winning. Its about those of us with disabilities constantly having to fight for what we are entitled to, constantly.

Two threads on the same day about the same thing.

It tiring.

PurpleDaisies · 06/11/2018 15:09

That’s not at all what I’m saying. I recognise there are people who struggle to get in and out of cars. Parents with small children could be one group. There are lots of others who don’t qualify for a blue badge. I’m not saying parents shouldn’t be allowed to park in the new accessible spaces, just that others others with just as legitimate a need should alsk be allowed to. Like you with your nan before she got her blue badge.

PurpleDaisies · 06/11/2018 15:10

I haven’t come across that dorset. Hopefully they will spread to other areas.

Dorsetdays · 06/11/2018 15:11

Bish. Not sure who you’re ‘fighting’ on here though? The suggestion was to swap over spaces so there is adequate parking for everyone in a car park where there is clearly already far more than the legal minimum BB spaces.

No ones taking anything away and sometimes defensiveness has the opposite effect that you wanted.

BishBoshBashBop · 06/11/2018 15:17

No ones taking anything away and sometimes defensiveness has the opposite effect that you wanted.

Yes 'you disabled people give up your spaces' nice. Now you want us to not be defensive. You want p&c spaces before 8am then ask the store for them. All to easy to just say take some of the BB spaces.

We aren't going away.

Ever thought that is because of those with disabilities fighting for spaces that other have benefited? Spaces on buses for eg pushchairs is because of those with disabilities fighting for a wheelchair access.

Dorsetdays · 06/11/2018 15:21

That’s my point Bish. No ones taking ANY BB spaces away in this scenario.

The OP has also already spoken to the supermarket.

Perhaps before you do get defensive without reason you should RTFT?

SinkGirl · 06/11/2018 15:22

What really needs to happen is standardising who qualifies for blue badges and apply this to everyone rather than the ridiculous postcode lottery that applies now.

A friend of mine with the same main condition as me managed to get a BB easily from her local council (as she should, it’s bloody painful). I don’t qualify for one despite having been on daily morphine for over a decade, being stuck indoors most days and having three separate conditions that cause severe pain and affect my mobility. I can’t get one for my son who’s visually impaired, severely delayed and has other serious health issues, but I could in another county.

You frequently see people saying they’re disabled but don’t have a blue badge, these people are more likely to park in BB spaces when they shouldn’t. Here you need to have higher rate mobility for DLA or mobility section for PIP but I know plenty of disabled people who’ve been refused PIP, even a friend of mine with CP. His benefits and blue badge were taken away when the change was made from DLA to PIP and he has visibly struggled to walk since I met him 15 years ago.

PurpleDaisies · 06/11/2018 15:29

You frequently see people saying they’re disabled but don’t have a blue badge, these people are more likely to park in BB spaces when they shouldn’t.

Are they? Where’s your evidence for that? Most cars I see in B.B. spaces without one displayed are shite vans.

PurpleDaisies · 06/11/2018 15:29

Blush typo there!

PurpleDaisies · 06/11/2018 15:30

I agree the process for B.B. allocation should be standardised,

Sirzy · 06/11/2018 15:36

as far as i am concerned they should massively increase the number of blue badge spaces and make it so anyone who gets mobility element of dla or pip at any level automatically is eligible.

To get mobility then you have been assessed as having significant trouble getting around in some way anyway so it would save a fortune in council “assessments” anyway

Mia1415 · 06/11/2018 15:50

Why don't people read the thread before jumping in!

The store offers P&C spaces.

The OP likes to use these spaces.
The spaces are not available when she wants to shop.
The OP speaks to the shop to ask if they can resolve this, so that she can use this nice, useful 'service' they provide to their customers.
The shop say no, and tell her to use the disabled spaces.

The OP is asking if this is reasonable.

Really whether you think there shouldn't be P&C spaces, or their should be more disabled spaces etc is irrelevant.
