they never have elected a female leader dont reply Harriet harman as she was intrem and not elected.
aibu to think its so sexist of the labour party to not elect a female leader since the conservatives elected there first female leader on 11th of February 1975 in the 33 years and 15,973 days since then labour have never had an elected female leader. they have had 8 different male leaders and 10 different elections.
also it cant be because the general population is sexist as we have had 4 of the last 10 general elections won by females. please can any labour supporters explain why they never have had a female leader and why it is not obvious sexism.

To be fair to the LDs, they've only existed since 1988 and have never had anything remotely approaching the same number of MPs as Labour or the Tories. They do have a female deputy leader though, which Labour have only managed twice (and the Tories never). Two of the party's Presidents have been female.
the conservatives dont elect a deputy leader and its a lesser/ unknown position (who knew hague had it for 10 years) its less than the 4 great offices of state which labour have had 2 for 3 years i also know harman was deputy leader and never made dpm or any other high office

As a long time member of the labour party and a jewish woman I have to say that for me the political stance of the the leader of the labour party is more important than their gender. I voted for Corbyn in both leadership elections and I still feel he and John McDonnell are the best prospects to lead the party and that their political stance is closest to mine and to the majority of members. I could have voted for Liz Kendall but I may as well have voted Tory.

I would like to see a female leader of the labour party one day soon but it has to be the right woman, not just for the sake of it.

It is odd that the Tories have provided us with two female prime ministers and Labour haven’t managed one.

But I actually think that hard left ideology is underpinned by misogyny.

ShatnersWig · 05/11/2018 15:02

What would actually be far more ground breaking, in my opinion, would be to have a female Chancellor of the Exchequer, no matter which party was in Government.

I just despair at Labour.

I don't care if it's a man or a woman who leads it, someone who has enough articulacy and presence to actually mount an effective opposition is all I ask for. Corbyn is definitely not it.

No one is holding the Tories to account. They should be wincing and squirming at every turn for the damage they're inflicting on the country at every turn through Brexit and austerity, instead they're laughing all the way to the (electoral) bank.

I'm a lifetime Labour Party member and I've been excusing them for far too long; the reason we haven't had a female leader yet is just plain bloody sexism.

Keep an eye out for pictures in the media of shadow cabinet members or other members prominent in the party, out in the field, addressing the constituency, or other public meetings. If the speaker is female then Jeremy Corbyn will also be somewhere there, speaking to people separately. He doesn't do this with the male shadow cabinet members. Why does he do that? I don't think there's anyone here who can't get that one right first time.

IMHO, it's been especially noticeable when Angela Rayner and Emily Thornberry are speaking; it's no coincidence they're the two female Labour people with the highest profiles. It's something Rebecca Long-Bailey will have to get used to soon, too. Jess Phillips is already attracting nasty attention from the Jeremy Corbyn crowd, although Momentum people I know ignore it, and they get shitty with me when I challenge it.

Sexism; otherwise how do you explain why the Labour Party leadership has been manipulated into promoting the rights of trans women without any discussion of all the concerns around that. That concern was about process, not whether or not we should represent trans women, of course we should. But we won't secure a safe foundation for progress for any women in this party unless we do something about these pervasive sexist attitudes. Even Emily Thornberry has been on record as saying we women should just shut up and get on with it - as recently as this year's party conference. Easy for Lady Nugee to say, I suppose.

Dychmygol · 05/11/2018 16:46

ShatnersWig but 1988 is still 30 years however I didn't know that women do have a platform within the party that isn't piecemeal or undermined by the actions of men.

That being said they've never been remotely interesting in terms of local candidates or national policies for me to register much notice of them as a party, I just knew they hadn't had a female leader.
