To ask how you stay motivated for big crochet/knitting projects

So i am about 2/3 way through crocheting a blanket for dd2. Its single bed size and essentially justrepeating the same stitch (attic 24 coast ripple for those who'd know)

It sat in its bag for ages as life got busy and ive got it out again this week after nearly a year!

What keeps you going through projects like thus? I get distracted by my phone but also get a bit borrd but don't feel i can start anything else until this is finished? Do you have mini projects on the go?

If i do a sripe a day and the finishing off i should complete by Xmas

I find I can do an Attic 24 blanket in about 6 weeks. I usually break down the amount of stripes into however many a day I need to do in 6 weeks and aim for that target. I don't find it a chore though and I do smaller projects at the same time.

Bordercollies · 04/11/2018 15:44

I have about 6 projects on the go at once. Ive got about 4 garments (knitted and crocheted) plus a gigantic star blanket and a christmas cushion. If i get bored i go and crochet a baby something and then go back. I do have the attention span of a 4 year old though Grin

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 04/11/2018 15:44

I tend to binge knit/crochet... I do all nighters occasionally till it's finished 😳

Probably not a useful suggestion to others though

MaMisled · 04/11/2018 15:45

I tend to have other smaller projects on the go toi, for a change of scenery!

Governoress86 · 04/11/2018 15:46

I have only ever done one blanket and that was for my sister who was pregnant. I kept motivated as I kept thinking of my sister's face when she opened the gift.

I tend to do smaller projects myself like at the minute I'm making a pair of fingerless wrist warmers for my DM and DMIL.

I also tend to break it down like PP said.

Crochet and knitting has been a life saver with regards to my MH.
I tend to struggle for ideas on projects and get sick of doing the same things so I tend to scourer YouTube and ravelry.

OldBean2 · 04/11/2018 15:46

You are not alone... and the reason is, that it's gets boring. My killer is SSS, second sock syndrome, the first one flies off my needles, it knits itself but the second, well I've knitted one, I know how to do it but it is so tedious to have to make another.

You could set yourself a target, or do what the rest of us do and start something else to take your mind off it!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/11/2018 15:47

I tend to get quite obsessive and start to skip housework and other bits to get a project done once I get started on something.
Might not be the best example either.

Streetart · 04/11/2018 15:48

Pick a tv series to binge watch, make that your knitting/crochet tv. Every time you watch an episode pick up your woolly project and work on it whilst watching/listening to the tv. If you watch multiple episodes in an evening then keep working on the project. Works for me.

Lwmommy · 04/11/2018 15:50

They are usually my bus projects, I get the bus in and out of work every day and just sit and crochet there and back. It whiles away the journey when I'd otherwise just be sat staring out the window.

LEMtheoriginal · 04/11/2018 15:53

Professor moody that is impressive!! Ix be happy with 6 months. I dont finish work til 6.30 so often too tired in evenings by time im sat down. had gin

How difficult are the edges?

HardAsSnails · 04/11/2018 15:55

Netflix/Prime.

woopdedoodle · 04/11/2018 15:55

Box sets, it's the only way I can get going again after a project has been put to one side.

An afternoon with the telly can kick start anything.

I've just finished a jumper, the last 6 rows have taken 2 weeks, roughly the same amount of time the rest took me.

Good luck.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 04/11/2018 15:57

At the end of the summer I decided I wanted to make three blankets for a friend's daughters. They are all different but all using the same amount of wool so roughly the same size. The first was really easy - it only took me 10 days - the second one took a month or so and now I am a quarter of the way through the third. I took a break because I wanted to make a hat. So I made the hat and picked up the blanket again. I did about 20 rows then "had" to have a break to add a border to a dress that was too short. I know that if I just got on with it I could have it done in a week or so but everything is much more interesting than making that blanket!

Knowmydisrespect · 04/11/2018 15:59

I'm another obsessive, up all night, telly watching, binger.

Alfie190 · 04/11/2018 16:02

I am new to crochet and recently completed my first blanket. My squares were multi coloured and quite interesting to crochet (not granny squares). I think I did it a bit smaller than I should have as I guess I did run out of steam. I am studying full time this year so I used to allow an hour or two in the morning before I got onto studies.

Micke · 04/11/2018 16:08

I take a break and do other things, then like others, occasionally have binge weekends where I'll knock off a large section - eg. I have a lacework baby blanket on the go at the moment, I've done the centre, and 1.5 sides. I've left it for the last month, but I'm going to have a push next weekend to get within one side of ending.

I find that sometimes, if I leave it too long, something will change and my tension will go wierd, or I'll forget the repeat, or (once, horrifyingly) my son decides to have a play with scissors..... so I'm dissatisfied and then I'll never go back and finish (I have one glove like that, half a waistcoat, a couple of jumpers for the kids that I'm not happy with etc)

LEMtheoriginal · 04/11/2018 16:09

Alfie that sounds impressive.

I have found crochet amazing for my MH. I got into doing wooly hugs on here and made lots of squares, quite intricate ones. I really impressed myself however joining squares is up there with splicing the atom in my mind, never attempted it.

Useful tips. I’m trying to do a double bed sized star blanket and I’m so bored!

soulrider · 04/11/2018 16:10

Box sets for me too. My current blanket project is accompanied by House of Cards. Although I actually find it incredibly difficult to watch anything without doing crochet right now. Just avoid anything too complicated or with subtitles.

Still ebbs and flows in terms of progress but just about finishing my 140cm wide granny stripe blanket after 3 months.

FlaviaAlbia · 04/11/2018 16:14

Deadlines work for me, I try to get things done for certain dates but also have about 4 other projects on the go so if I'm really not enjoying it I can pick up something else for a break.

DS is also helpful at putting pressure on if it's for him Grin

ProfessorMoody · 04/11/2018 16:43

The edges are easy :)

Oob yes, box sets. My crochet TV is something I've seen before so I don't have to concentrate on it and can picture what's going on just by listening. Favourites are Gilmore Girls, Dawson's Creek, Gavin and Stacey, Big Bang and Friends.

Also, if you're not counting too much, audiobooks are great too!

Micke · 04/11/2018 16:46

double bed sized star blanket

I may know the one you're talking about. I keep looking at it, and deciding that as much as I would love it, I just don't have the dedication - not even necessarily for the knitting itself, but I'd find the joining up too dull.

Beingginger · 04/11/2018 16:53

If it makes you feel better I started a coast blanket 3 years ago and I’ve only done about 10 stripes Blush
I prefer knitting and find it much easier.

Alfie190 · 04/11/2018 16:55

Is it impressive? I am flattered I want a blushing emoticon. Sorry not good pic of blanket.

I crocheted these squares and this is my blanket.

Deadlines (I join blankets for WH) or breaks. Either complete breaks (over the summer my allotment uses all my spare time) or small projects - I'm doing Christmas decorations at the moment. I made a blanket for our bed, Attic24 granny stripe, king-sized, it took 4 years. Apart from boredom the main issue was the size it became, I do most of my work sat by swimming pools and sports pitches so small is easier.
