To tell H he doesn’t need to go to A and E?

H stepped on a rusty nail late last night while manning our bonfire. It’s not a deep wound but the nail was filthy. His leg ached for a bit but is ok this morning. He can wait to see a GP tomorrow can’t he?

Is he up to date on tetanus injections

GucciKnickers · 04/11/2018 11:43

Just ring 111 get a GP out of hours appointment? It doesn't need A&E but he may need a tetanus booster.

PurpleDaisies · 04/11/2018 11:43

No, he might need a tetanus booster.

Birdsgottafly · 04/11/2018 11:46

He should have went. I did similar and had to get the rust rinsed out of the wound, that bit was painful. Anything that leaves particles means the wound needs cleaning.

I had a tetanus as well.

Why do you get to be in charge?

Hushnownobodycares · 04/11/2018 11:46

Depends on his tetanus status.

DS had a Saturday job in a garden centre a few years back and cut his thumb badly on a piece of fencing. Minor injuries unit didn't do tetanus injections so we had a five hour wait in A&E for a booster.

I thought it was worth it.

Birdsgottafly · 04/11/2018 11:46

They can do all that in a Walk-in as well.

annie987 · 04/11/2018 11:47

He doesn’t think he’s had a tetanus booster in adulthood.

Underpressureidiot · 04/11/2018 11:47

I think you should have called 111, if it was filthy he could easily develop an infection. It needs to be cleaned ASAP and he needs to make sure he’s up to date on tetanus jabs

Bambamber · 04/11/2018 11:47

I would be phoning 111 to get an OOH appointment

GucciKnickers · 04/11/2018 11:47

111.nhs.uk

There you go, out of hours medical advice when it isn't an emergency.

Bobbiepin · 04/11/2018 11:47

Then he needs to go.

Villanellesproudmum · 04/11/2018 11:48

Isn’t he old enough to make his own decision?

RubiksQueen · 04/11/2018 11:50

Nic Grundy off the Archers died from getting sepsis after scratching herself on a rusty nail [helpful]

Nah he should probably go sooner rather than later. Minor injuries?

Angrybird345 · 04/11/2018 11:50

Yes!! Could get sepsis!

Bombardier25966 · 04/11/2018 11:52

This is exactly what A&E was traditionally for, accidents! There may be a minor injuries unit that can also deal with it, but not all areas have them.

PurpleDaisies · 04/11/2018 11:52

Does your husband have form for not making sensible decisions? I’m not sure why you’re questioning his competence to make this decision correctly.

YouTheCat · 04/11/2018 11:52

My friend ended up with sepsis from a rusty nail in the foot. Get him to a walk-in place at least.

listsandbudgets · 04/11/2018 11:53

I would be worried that his LEG hurt after treading on something that presumably went into his foot. That suggests bacteria travelling upwards to me though perhaps its me being over dramatic.

I would be at least finding a minor injuries unit to get the sound for a ed and checked but a tetnaus booster probably wouldn't go amiss either

lljkk · 04/11/2018 11:54

NHS Direct replacement whatever that line is called. I think a tetanus booster from GP surgery tomorrow would suffice, too.

LizzieBennettDarcy · 04/11/2018 12:00

Do you have a local minor injuries unit? That's exactly what these are for. I doubt a GP would do a tetanus jab at an OOH centre tbh.

But I'd want it cleaned properly and a tetanus shot. I had a rusty nail go right through my foot and it was incredibly painful for weeks after.

Quartz2208 · 04/11/2018 12:01

Minor injuries now I would say

annie987 · 04/11/2018 12:01

He’s called 111. They said he can wait to go to the GP tomorrow. 48 hours to get a tetanus apparently. Thanks all.

UpstartCrow · 04/11/2018 12:02

The nail was filthy so he needs to go asap and get the wound cleaned, and have the tetanus vaccine.

Why not take a take a first aid course?

ladyme · 04/11/2018 12:04

It's an out of hour issue, not an A&E one.

megletthesecond · 04/11/2018 12:05

I wouldn't trust 111 on this. They told me to leave my dd with a burst ear drum. I ignored them and the OOH GP said I was right to get it sorted immediately.

He should go to OOH, walk in or A&E. It's an accident after all.
