Over the years we have always been a PlayStation family. (Had a PS1, PS2, then a PS3).

A couple of years ago someone passed on their old Xbox 360 to us. Agree that it's old now and an Xbox 1 would be better.

Last year dh got a decent bonus last November and we looked into buying the 4 boys a new console between them for Christmas. We took ages discussing the Xbox 1, PS4 and Nintendo Switch, weighing up the pros and cons. Asked in Game shop etc. for which one was best for different things etc. They said the main difference is the choice of games, Switch had more suitable ones for younger children, PS4 more geared towards older teens and adults.

It eventually came down to deciding between the PS4 and the Switch. As the boys ranged from age 7 - 16 we went with the Switch, just for the variety of games.

Even though we have always preferred the PlayStation consoles we have never regretted deserting them for the Switch. It is more portable and suitable for our now 8 yr old and 11 yr old.

One thing to take note of is the games. Have a look in game stores for the selection and see which ones are most suitable/relevant/desired by your ds. Some games are only available on PlayStation, some only available on Switch, some only available on Xbox. If your ds would like a certain game that is only available on one console you might want to take that into account. Our boys were interested in one game only available on PlayStation and one only available on Switch so we weighed up which one would be least disappointing to not receive in our decision.

Does your ds have a preference over which console?

I am an xbox fan. We had a 360 and then bought an xbox one about 3 years ago. My one thought would be that there are less games for the younger audience on xbox and playstation. So it depends on whether you'll let him play games that are technically age rated. I was surprised but going through the our games and 18 of them are rated 18+ (what a coincidence!) and 3 of them are rated 16+. We own nothing with a lower rating and I'm honestly surprised that many of them are rated so old. We have games like Far Cry, Metal Gear Solid, Gears of War, Fallout, Witcher 3, Skyrim, Final Fantasy, etc.
We also have a Switch and the games on that are much more age friendly for a 9 year old! I think the Switch is one of my favourite consoles. It's expensive but it's great.
I don't know enough about the play station to pass comment on that though.

Wrenika - you're wrong, sorry. There are just as many age suitable games on the Xbox.

ballseditupforever · 05/11/2018 12:01

At what age did you allow a headset

Sandbox · 05/11/2018 12:04

Wrenika we have a lot of Xbox games, all the Lego games (Indiana Jones/pirates of the Caribbean/marvel superheroes/avengers/Jurassic world etc etc) movie games like kung fu panda, the incrediblea, cars I could go on and on and on! We have over 50 games and all are age rated suitable for my 8 year old

ProfessorMoody · 05/11/2018 13:04

I allowed one at 7.

Tiscold - Grin

Tiscold · 05/11/2018 17:43

@professormoody.

Can't help it Grin. Its like when people ask for recommendations for hotels etc and then people go ooooh lovely self catering / caravan site there. I internally scream, BLOODY HOTEL YOU MUPPIT.

ProfessorMoody · 05/11/2018 17:45

I know, it's ridiculous!

Or when someone has an issue with something and you get people coming along to say "well mine is fine". Erm, OK. Good for you - that's not what was asked Grin

Tiscold · 06/11/2018 08:37

Yay found someone else like me Grin

TheCatWhisperer · 06/11/2018 08:49

My 10 year old has an Xbox one s. I like it because you can use it to watch Netflix/now TV, YouTube etc plus parental controls are super easy to set up. Never ever had an issue getting mine off it as he knows any moody behaviour would result in removal which he'd never risk.

It's a good idea to go into a game shop or look online and see which console has the most relevant games.
We have loads of consoles blame DH and the ones that get used the most are the Xbox and switch, the PlayStation is never used and neither is the NES, but that's due to the games we have.
If you don't like the games you have you're not going to play on it regardless. 😁
