To think companies cold calling at ppl's homes should be made illegal?

Fed up with this - been home all week and am getting about 2 cold callers every day! Considering it's illegal to shake a tin at someone on the high street, why are we so laid back about complete strangers coming up to our homes and waking us up/interrupting us whenever they fancy it? Not to mention the dodgy guys who look like they are sizing up your alarm systems (usually has me wondering if someone is trying to get around the back while they keep me at the front door).
Surely with the internet, there isn't a need for this?

YANBU, OP.

This rattled my cage too. 6 - SIX - tree surgeons called this week, and another six 'drive specialists'. Just jog on and leave us in peace, FFS.

BTW we have a tree surgeon in twice a year and our drive is immaculate. Shysters.

I dont get them often but yes they are annoying had them just before 9pm once and they told me they were allowed to knock at that time!

Register with the Telephone Preference Service, and get your service provider to block incoming international calls.

Isn't it weird how they all descend? I've got a new build house and had 4 double glazing ones all trying to convince me my windows are over 10 years old!

I was thinking perhaps it's because it's half term they've been pushed out of the office by the managers hoping to catch the parents at home.

I heard if you put a sign up saying No Cold Callers you can legally call the police... Anyone know if that's true? Sounds like it might put some of them off at least!

You can get stickers from your council or I think the police which say you don't want door to door callers and that if they don't leave immediately they are committing a criminal offence. Since we've had ours we've only had one caller.

MissEliza · 03/11/2018 11:59

I totally agree. I might be able to hold my own but I worry about older and vulnerable people who can be conned or pressured into buying things.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 03/11/2018 12:00

Thanks Upstart, I meant more people knocking on the door. Although I agree telesales is annoying, at least I can ignore the phone or usually see if it's a number I don't know. With people turning up I weirdly always think there's either been an emergency on the street or a friend is in need. Harder to hide when people can hear kids playing or see you moving about etc!

Tell them they need to talk to your landlord as you can't agree to anything without permission. How are they to know if you own or not.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 03/11/2018 12:04

Am going to get this I think as our council doesn't seem to do them.

Just a heads up most cold callers take notice of the signs but charity workers and religious bodies tend to ignore.

Aeroflotgirl · 03/11/2018 12:11

It is intrusive and invasive. I have now put up a sticker, and I haven't had any thank goodness.

MarilynsDressOnAVent · 03/11/2018 12:28

I was going to suggest a sign like these too. A few months ago our local police left a bunch of similar signs and stickers for villagers to take. I gave one to the neighbour and put one on my own door. On more than one occasion sales teams and chuggers were dropped off in the village and I watched them go to every house on my street. When they got to my gate, they saw the sign and turned to the next house. They saw my neighbour's sign and buggered off from their house too. Those signs are like magic! Cold caller kryptonite!

I had this when we moved into our new build. Constant door knocking at least twice a day. Estate is full of them.
I got one of these for 99p off eBay and not one since. Well just the one. Opened the door, raised an eyebrow and pointed at the sign.... Best 99p I've ever spent

Is it illegal to shake tins at people in the street? I still see it. I just walk straight past.

On the rare occasion I get a phone call on landline, I can normally tell if it’s a cold call because it takes a couple of seconds for them to connect when I answer the phone for some reason. So now, if they don’t answer my ‘hello’ within a second, I hang up. If it’s someone legitimate, they can call back. If I get a call from a landline call on my mobile what I don’t recognise, I let it ring out and then google the number after it’s stopped ringing and it’s always linked to scams. Bastards. I am also concerned for the elderly who might be taken in.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/11/2018 13:32

Granted, they're nowhere near as annoying as an actual person, but I also hate the endless charity bags being posted through the letterbox. If I filled every one, I would have nothing at all left in my house. Why do they do it? Nobody ever comes to collect them anyway, so the odd bag of clothes that DOES get put out just gets left there for weeks.

Do they never look at their figures and analyse how successful their campaigns are? "How many bags did we give out? 1 million. How many did we receive back full? None. Why might there have been none at all left out for us when we went to collect them? Wooooaaahhhh!!!! That's where we're going wrong - we never go back to collect them!!!"

It's like the old joke of the two workmen, one of whom digs holes and the other fills them in again. When asked what they're up to, they say that the third bloke who plants the trees is off sick! They're not even the right size or strong enough to use as bin bags.

Who could possibly benefit from paying people to endlessly post 'gifts' of rubbish plastic bags through people's letterboxes? Maybe these can be included in future bans designed to cut down on unnecessary plastic production and subsequent waste.

strumpetblowingatrumpet · 03/11/2018 16:05

I agree it should be banned- there are a number of people in this area posing as people offering services to either scope properties or commit distraction robberies so if it were banned this should pretty much stop altogether. Any reputable company could leave a leaflet.
