Roast...

With no roast potatoes?
Really want mash instead but I'm cooking for other people too...
Should I just shove a few aunt Bessie's in or just let them eat what we are eating?

Will be beef pot roast, mash potatoes, pigs in blankets, carrots, broccoli, peas, stuffing balls, Yorkshires and gravy

Would you be pissed off not having any roasties? My ovens only small...

Wouldn’t worry about it too much!!! The rest sounds delicious I’m sure your guests will be busy having nice time than worrying about how the potato’s are cooked Grin

PurpleDaisies · 03/11/2018 10:24

You don’t need both mash and toast potatoes. What you’ve done sounds perfect

HolyMountain · 03/11/2018 10:24

I love roast potatoes and always do them and have mashed too but do what suits you and what is most convenient.

PurpleWithRed · 03/11/2018 10:29

Pot roast = mash in my house. Pot roast is honorary casserole, so goes with mash or baked potatoes. Lump of meat in the oven = roast and gets roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. This is the Right Way. Oh, and second potato option is just making a slave of yourself to the family, unless you want both types, in which case it is Permissible.

DonaldDucksTowel · 03/11/2018 10:31

Just don't call it a roast, then people won't expect typical roast stuff
Sounds yum

bumblebee39 · 03/11/2018 11:15

Problem is Ive already invited them for a "roast"
I have potatoes but can't face making roasties from scratch and really don't fancy them anyway...

Maybe I should warn them it's not a classic British roast but pot roast. Or maybe I'll just save the mash for another day idk...

I'm pregnant and so bleeding hormonal and indecisive!

If you're cooking for them they should shut up and be grateful. HTH.

BuffaloCauliflower · 03/11/2018 13:15

We always have both at my Mums, I do both if I’m doing a ‘big’ roast, but either are fine.

LiquoricePickle · 03/11/2018 13:17

Sounds lovely. Mash is fine!

MacosieAsunter · 03/11/2018 13:17

Mash or roast, you still have to peel the buggers.

Not sure why you can face peeling them and then smashing their heads in, but not putting them in boiling oil Grin

ApolloandDaphne · 03/11/2018 13:17

I like mash better than roast potatoes so you would make me happy!

MissionItsPossible · 03/11/2018 13:20

Stop worrying! If anyone invited me for a roast I’d be there like a shot with no complaints! And quite frankly, anyone who would accept an invite for dinner and then moan about it (allergies/vegetarianism or veganism aside) is rude!

Alfie190 · 03/11/2018 13:29

I would like roast potatoes on a roast dinner. But I certainly would not be annoyed if I didn't get them when somebody else was kind enough to cook me a meal. Mash is lovely too.

WhiteCoyote · 03/11/2018 13:35

I’d feel put out as the roast potatoes are my favourite part of a roast. I definitely wouldn’t complain at someone else’s cooking though. Especially not someone who’s pregnant Grin

AiryFairyUnicornRainbow · 03/11/2018 13:36

I love Mash. I prefer them to roast

But being a kid in ireland, Mash was something that was on the table most days - so i think that is why lol

Loopytiles · 03/11/2018 13:37

Roast means roast potatoes IMO and I would prefer Aunt Bessie’s to no roasts at all.

youngestisapsycho · 03/11/2018 13:38

I wouldn’t be happy cos I don’t like mash!

Drunkandstupidagain · 03/11/2018 13:40

I wouldn’t be annoyed at them not being there ( PIL dont always make both) but I always make both as that’s what my mum done ! If it’s getting you down and worried I think if you are steaming potatoes anyways just do a few more and then roast these? Shouldn’t take much longer?

LaurieMarlow · 03/11/2018 13:42

That's acceptable. I love mash.

Ispatienceavirtue · 03/11/2018 13:49

We always have both 🐷
If you are peeling potatoes for mash anyway just do some extra, boil together then take out your par boiled ones to roast, keeping boiling the rest, mash, stick in oven proof dish, cover with foil and keep in bottom of oven until ready to serve.
Unless you're using frozen mash of course!

Eliza9917 · 03/11/2018 13:56

What's a pot roast?

I think a real roast needs roast potatoes
