'I'm not racist but....'
You just know that whatever they say next IS going to be so racist..

Pet peeves everyone, what's your most hated phrase...?

MereDintofPandiculation · 03/11/2018 10:47

jeez - I was going to say that! Especially when "she was like" means "she said"

"Long story short" irrationally annoys me. Especially when what usually follows is a short story made long with unnecessary detail.

"despise" to mean "really dislike (an inanimate object)". Can you really feel contempt for a table? OK, meanings of words change over time, but it doesn't mean I have to like it!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/11/2018 10:49

And why is everybody “fuming” these days?

Very true. It seems like nobody ever has the ability to be merely put out, disappointed, miffed or peeved at a trivial irritant any more.

Lizzie48 · 03/11/2018 10:50

'They came to visit DH and I.' That's grammatically incorrect, it should be 'DH and me'. You wouldn't say, 'They came to visit I', would you?

What makes it worse is that it's mostly well educated people that do this.

TheDeadlineIsFriday · 03/11/2018 10:53

@positivevibez

That!

And, “It’s one of them....”

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/11/2018 10:53

"Long story short" irrationally annoys me. Especially when what usually follows is a short story made long with unnecessary detail.

See also: people who waste many minutes telling you with full tedious minutiae what they WOULD have liked to tell you if only they had enough time.

HammerToFall · 03/11/2018 10:54

To be honest. My husband does it continually in text but shortens it to tbh. Really pisses of me off.

pinkstripeycat · 03/11/2018 10:58

It will sort itself out

Something DM always says (and i know she means she doesn’t want to talk about that particular subject anymore)

LavenderBush · 03/11/2018 10:59

"You want to..." / "You don't want to..."

Used to tell you what you SHOULD (or shouldn't) be doing.

No, it's not any less rude. Piss off.

If I WANTED to do that, I'd be doing it already, actually. Do you see me doing it?

ALemonyPea · 03/11/2018 11:00

Do you know what I mean?

pinkstripeycat · 03/11/2018 11:06

Putting super in front of everything

Contacting my telephone (or other) provider and the call recording says “We are SUPER busy at the moment etc....”

Birdsgottafly · 03/11/2018 11:08

"But it is what it is"
"With all due respect"

You need to mix in Gangster circles to completely get those two phrases Grin

wonkylegs · 03/11/2018 11:15

I'm sorry you were offended/upset etc...

I wouldn't let my kids get away with this kind of half hearted apology but find adults use it all the time.

KeepServingTheDrinks · 03/11/2018 11:15

Wrong use of the word myself, ie
Myself and Johnny went into town yesterday ......

I came on to say this, Chamomileteaplease. Particularly stupid people/contestants on Coach Trip often do this.

I also REALLY hate "sheer weight of traffic". It's a phrase that doesn't really mean anything, even though everyone understands what's meant by it. I take personal pride saying something alternative like "there was a lot of traffic tonight" instead.

And "totally unique". Because unique says it already.

And anyone who gives more than 100%

"You want to..." / "You don't want to..."

Used to tell you what you SHOULD (or shouldn't) be doing.

Why on earth would you not just gratefully accept what is clearly thoughtful, well-intentioned advice?! Grin Grin Grin

TooMuchTidying · 03/11/2018 12:05

'Just to play devils advocate...'

Kemer2018 · 03/11/2018 12:34

Are you busy?
Yes.
Continues to hover.
Ignore ignore.
Eventually goes away.

Are you eating?
Yes
Goes away

I know you're busy.....followed by demands........which I ignore then ask them to email me and I'll look when I'm not busy.

"It's a time and resource issue" from boss when i highlight glaring issues which are current and predicted.

Not very useful. Patting me on the head and shusshing would be as useless.

LucieMorningstar · 03/11/2018 12:38

“Suck it up”

“Don’t take it personally”

HildaZelda · 03/11/2018 12:59

"What's for you won't pass you" - biggest fucking cliche ever. I hate it!

BishBoshBashBop · 03/11/2018 13:01

And why is everybody “fuming” these days?

No idea.

There are so many people whose 'blood is boiling' that there must be a heat wave going on.

mostdays · 03/11/2018 13:11

Just reached my limit with an and have walked out to hide in McDonalds with a coffee and have thought of more irrationally annoying sayings...

"Reach out to" when they mean make contact with.

"Sourced" as in "I sourced the paint for this room..." shut up you pretentious little knob, you bought the paint after a bit of looking for one you wanted, just like everyone else does.

seven201 · 03/11/2018 13:12

My boss says "In the nicest possible sense" at least 8 times a day. That along with "does that make sense?". She is the most condescending person ever made!

I personally love it when people say "turned round and said" just because I think it's so ridiculous. Always makes me chuckle to myself.

PrincessButtockUp · 03/11/2018 13:18

Please who say "I'm just being honest" rarely appreciate you being similarly honest with them.

Most of these are meaningless noise made by people who feel the need to fill the space between thoughts with speech. I wince and chuckle inwardly whenever I hear "but ... erm ..." because I can't help hearing it as "bottom".

🤣

Spankyoumuchly · 03/11/2018 13:22

Everyone is on the spectrum.

No. Autism is caused by structural differences in the brain. Don't try to negate autistic people's struggle. Also I don't need you to try to make me feel okay about it because it makes you feel bad.

Hoopaloop · 03/11/2018 13:25

**'I'm not racist but....'

I don't mean to be rude but....

No offence, but...

"I'm not being funny, but..."

“So I turned around to her and said ....and then she turned around to me and said..”

Absolutely assholery.
