Wibu to put heating on during the day?

I'm hoping to hear I am nbu so I can feel okay with boosting the warmth, as my parents brought us up to shiver through the winter, and it feels too indulgent!

We've moved to a new house, it's lovely but old and draughty. I'm home a lot during the day with DS3 aged 3 and our new baby. It's so cold today!

For other people in these circumstances, when do you run your heating? We're not cash strapped, but with 4 DCs and me on maternity leave we are keeping an eye on things like the heating bill.

I don’t put thd heating on when I’m at home alone, I put on extra layers but you’ve got a baby and toddler.

Put it on.

Bambamber · 02/11/2018 13:19

I put my heating on whenever I'm at home and cold, and extra blankets just aren't cutting it. Heating doesn't go above 18 though

kaytee87 · 02/11/2018 13:19

If you have a new baby at home and you can afford to keep them warm then you'd be unreasonable not to put the heating on

Silverstreaks · 02/11/2018 13:21

Put it on. Its miserable being cold in your own home.

Nedzilla · 02/11/2018 13:21

Of course you should put the heating on during the day if you are at home. You have said you can afford to. It is a basic utility imo not like splurging on Cavier.

Those who don't have heating on during the day when its cold are usually at work and children at school. You are at home with a toddler and new baby most of the day. and 2 other children before and after school.

We have the heating on 6.30am-8pm here. That ensures its warm when everything starts getting up around 7am, and once it turns off at 8pm the radiators stay warm another few hours here as its an oil system.

Our oil heating is old, so its basically on or off. If we had a newer system I would keep on overnight also on a lower temperature . Probably 21 degrees during the day, and 18 degrees at night

Put a cosy jumper and house socks on first, then set the heating to a comfortable temperature.

Redglitter · 02/11/2018 13:25

I put the heating on when I'm cold. I don't consider what time of day it is. If your cold put it on

chocolatesoup · 02/11/2018 13:26

YANBU
I keep the heating at 20degrees
The thermostat is set so if it drops below 20 it comes on.
Nothing worse than being uncomfortable in your own home!

QueenOfMyWorld · 02/11/2018 13:27

I refuse to be cold on my own home.Weve had heating on at a steady 18 degrees during the day for the last week.

Sciurus83 · 02/11/2018 13:27

Absolutely put the heating on!

NotUmbongoUnchained · 02/11/2018 13:28

I’m currently wrapped in a blanket lying in front of my log fire!

SharkSave · 02/11/2018 13:30

Put the heating on woman!

Figmentofimagination · 02/11/2018 13:30

Put the heating on. You are at home, you need to be warm. So does your 3yo and your baby.
Mine is set to 19'c at night in the warmest room of the house. When it drops below 19'c in that room (about 17.5'c in the rest of the house) it switches on. Then in the morning, I turn it up to 21'c, warm the rest of the house up and then knock it down to 20'c for the rest of the day until bedtime. I'm home most of the day with a toddler, I don't want us to be shivering. Especially since my toddler hates wearing lots of layers and socks.

Fluffyears · 02/11/2018 13:31

As long as you can afford it put it on.

notacooldad · 02/11/2018 13:33

Why wouldn't you put in on if you and the house is cold. It's not a restricted use utility.

SlipperyNettle · 02/11/2018 13:38

I’m genuinely confused by the idea that you wouldn’t put heating on if you’re in the house and feel cold? That’s a really weird view! If you pay the bill and can afford it and you’re cold get the bloody heating on! Why would it be acceptable to sit and shiver during the day but not at night? Confused

seventhgonickname · 02/11/2018 13:39

I just have the heating on downstairs if it's cold in the day.

TheLongRider · 02/11/2018 13:45

Put on the heating but also do your best to draught proof the house otherwise you're just letting expensive heat escape.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 02/11/2018 14:14

My partner works from home so the heating is on all day.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 02/11/2018 14:14

Thank you all! My family comes from a part of the world where too much heating is seen as a bit of a moral failing, so it's good to hear I'm not completely silly. We are now slowly defrosting Smile

I always put extra layers on first but if I’m still cold the heating goes on. No matter what the time of day

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 02/11/2018 14:24

I won’t ever be cold in my own home, and I like it toasty, so my house is usually between 23 and 25.

Oysterbabe · 02/11/2018 14:42

I put mine on whenever I feel a bit cold, whenever that might be. I'll wear a jumper but I'm not layering up more than that and being uncomfortable.
