The hottest days have become almost 1C hotter, warm spells have increased, while the coldest days are not as cold

We've suffered crap weather in UK for years. Maybe people will even fly abroad less because of this?

We've got lots of threads here about all the Halloween stuff that's been purchased and Christmas Beauty Advent calendars and Christmas plans. It's ironic really!

Is everybody off calculating their carbon footprint now Hmm

Temperature increase is due to the greenhouse effect. This is caused by an increase in the amount of card on dioxide (caused by humans), it traps in the heat. This causes the oceans to get warmer. Warm water takes up more space than cold water, this leads to erosion of coastlines and destruction of natural habitats.

It also causes ice caps to melt, not only does this increase ocean volume it increases the amount of fresh water in the ocean. This changes how our oceans flow. (Plus the decreased ice caps causes the earth to heat up more - ice and snow don't absorb much of the sun's radiation. With the ice and snow lessening it's taking in more radiation).

The effect of all this is climate change. It will effect different parts of the world in different ways.
Droughts will probably lengthen (this means famines by the way).
Monsoons are less predictable. With monsoons increasing in the volume or length (this means flooding and the displacement of huge numbers of people). They may become shorted or contain less rain (causes agricultural difficulty with means less food and the displacement of huge numbers of people.)

As for Britain and Ireland. Remember that crap weather you mentioned OP? That'll get crapper - the extreme weather events (wind, snow, rain and heat) they'll become more frequent and more extreme. (This has an effect of agricultural production.)

Plus all the displaced people need to move somewhere. They will be in need of food and shelter. Immigration will increase and countries will have to adapt to this.

So that's what is not to like. It doesn't mean it'll just be a bit warmer and it certainly doesnt mean the end or even less 'crap weather'.

Stripy

Thank you Stripy. Scary stuff indeed.

How long have we got to make changes? Can we still pull it off? Why isn't the Government taking a hard line on banning all sorts of bad stuff as they have the power to do it? It will take it out of the hands of depending on some people's goodwill, as there will be a hardcore who will not change.

We could be running hydrogen cars by now, but the Government don't seem to be pursuing that in any great way. I don't get it.

No wonder people are confused and wonder what, if anything, can be done Confused

Just while I've been on here, there are sidebar adverts for cars (I don't even drive!) and more stuff to make for Halloween and stuff about Ski holidays (I never go on holiday).

I mean, seriously, can anyone blame me for feeling a bit cynical and defeated about it all? If worry would fix our problems, it would be great, but...

On a personal level it's a lot of the things already suggested. Nearly all take effort though, and being truthful with your self.
Walk and cycle rather than drive when possible (this takes effort of a 30 min walk over that 5 min cycle, and being honest with yourself that walking is possible and you don't have to drive.)

Turn off electrical items; lights when there's no on in the room, tv off standby etc. Putting an extra layer on before opting for turning the heating on. Using a water butt, showering over baths, turning off the tap when brushing your teeth.

Recycling is a no brainer. Refusing to use single use plastics. Use a lunch box instead foil or cling film etc.

Food needs to sources closer to home. Only by from an origin close to home.

Eating less meat (cattle need grassland, rainforest is destroyed to create more grassland). So at least one meat free day each week is a start.

I've car ads too now! 🙄

customerservicenightmare · 02/11/2018 10:14

I know I sounded flippant earlier, but really I'm almost done worrying about it. I think I have global warming fatigue Sad

I don't drive, I work from home, I have a much colder house than I am guessing most would tolerate, I have no kids, I don't go on holiday (even in the UK), I eat almost no meat, I don't buy papers/magazines/books/dvd as I am all digital. I don't keep up with fashion or the latest anything. Quite a minimalist, in fact.

We aren't causing global warming, we are speeding it up though.

StripySocksAndDocs · 02/11/2018 10:36

It's difficult as an individual who does think about impact. There's not a lot you can do about others consumption (sadly). At work if we go for coffee I take a reusable cup. All other get a disposal cup - this is despite their knowing it's one use and the volume used. Other than preaching your options on changing them are low. They may be doing other things though.

Positive for Britain- plastic bag usage decreased hugely. Whilst Britain lagged significantly behind timewise it saw the same decrease in use (which was 90% i think) as Ireland when the plastic bag tax was introduced.

Doesn't help the world the POTUS denies climate change.

StripySocksAndDocs · 02/11/2018 10:38
  • I do realise the coffee won't the locally sourced by the way!!
customerservicenightmare · 02/11/2018 11:09

It's interesting that the BBC headline was "Hotter days and tropical nights for the UK" and not "global warming crisis worsens". Strange!!!

If you’re going to post links in an attempt to prove your point, OP, you really should read the entire webpage first so you don’t look like an ignorant fool like you do now.

That bit you’ve copied and pasted is right underneath the very important word myth.

And right above that it says the vast majority of scientists in the 70s predicted warming.

Don't claim to know it all and never did. Happy to discuss.

That’s a poor attempt at a backtrack now you’ve been caught out, OP.

Love how you've moved on from 'what's not to love' to 'people just aren't doing enough'
