to let my 6yr old watch The Dark Crystal?

We're in our half term holiday rent and The Dark Crystal is in the dvd collection. I loved that movie as a kid although do recall it being fairly dark... but that was in the 80's so it's surely really dated? DH who has never watched it says DS6 cannot watch it. I did really love it as a child. AIBU?

Love love LOVE this film. I introduced my children to it much younger than 6; I suppose it depends on how sensitive the child is though. Mine were unfazed.

See also: Labyrinth 😍

Also, did you know that Netflix are producing a new Dark Crystal series?!

Thank you! I LOVE The Labyrinth too - but DH thought it was"cack" so won't entertain The Dark Crystal. Although am a bit worried if I watch it I might be disappointed.... a bit like The Navigator earlier this week!

There is something about Jim Henson films that stands the test of time I think. Watch it! 😁

gladheart · 31/10/2018 20:28

YES! I watched it when young and my siblings and I still love it.

I absolutely adore both of these films, watched them both loads as a kid.

Ds5 has seen clips of labyrinth but not the full thing. I think the dark crystal is possibly a bit less scary but might not keep the attention of a six yo.

Worth a shot though!

Keepithidden · 31/10/2018 20:31

Definitely! Our 6 year old daughter loved it. Though her 8 year old brother got scared. As previous poster said, make a judgement on the chd, rather than their age.

Interestingly, exactly the same happened with Labyrinth! Yet he loves Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds. Kids are odd.

Creatureofthenight · 31/10/2018 20:33

Dark Crystal is way scarier than Labyrinth - I still have trouble watching the Skeksies!

3boysandabump · 31/10/2018 20:33

My 3 year old loves dark crystal

milkjetmum · 31/10/2018 20:38

Have watched both with my dds at that are and younger and I think just be aware they might find different things scary to what you expect. I was scared of the vital essence extraction as a child and dds not bothered. But baby nearly crawling off ledge in closing sequence of labyrinth had dd2 in tears (which I was not expecting to be a scary bit for them).

Willow is on my list to watch with them soon, and drop dead fred! We all love princess bride too.

My dd has watched dark crystal since same age (we keep it in our caravan so it’s a holiday movie), she loves it. Finds it sad and a wee bit scary (less so now as she’s older) but v much a favourite

megamuff · 31/10/2018 20:54

Forecast says rain tomorrow so Dark Crystal it is! (yay) Thank you lovely ladies for reassuring me. Love, love, love Willow. Princess Bride is a classic...

Mine have watched it and they're 6/7 respectively! They seem unscathed Grin

Pfingstrose · 31/10/2018 21:25

Would add The Goonies to the list we are compiling too! 😁

pandarific · 31/10/2018 21:38

I would caution that at 5ish I was a bit traumatised by the death scene at the beginning where the bad guy crumbles into dust - properly got me obsessing about mortality, cried every night for a week or two because I was scared of dying and crumbling into dust!

But I was a sensitive one and I loved the film overall - up to you but I'd watch it with them.

WithAFaeryHandInHand · 31/10/2018 21:40

It’s a U isn’t it? Or is it a PG? I’d have no problem letting a 6yo watch this, unless they are especially sensitive.
