Has anyone therapist/person using therapy used this book and if so was it any use?

Having issues with anger at shit situations I can't change with a side of depression and anxiety due mainly to relationship problems and relate counsellor suggested I try this book.

Read the sample foreword and first two chapters. I also read through and tried the sample worksheets.

It sounds a load of rubbish if I'm honest but I could be wrong?

I was recommended it and it's great. It's really helpful to work through the exercises and helped me rationalise negative thought processes. If ever I feel my depression and anxiety picking up its really helpful to dip into now and then. I've got more familiar with some of the worksheets and can now work through without the physical pages and it helps me to calm down if I find myself catastrophising.

I found it really useful but then again I responded well to writing things down as I saw them vs how they were. It wasn’t something I could read from cover to cover if you see what I mean.

I do catastrophise (sp?) sometimes too Katiet123 so could be useful for that.

Mumberjack I think I understand you. For me, it's not a case of a difference of how things are and how I'm veiwing it and more struggling to get passed something that has happened.

I'm angry it's happened, it makes me sad that it has happened but it has happened the way I see it IYSWIM < That was an awful description sorry!

@whatmind I understand what you mean! I was ‘prescribed’ the book when pregnant again following a stillborn baby so it was more a survival and looking ahead thing to avoid always thinking and feeling the worst.

It didn’t really address the grief or trauma at that time - or I didn’t use it for that purpose - but I’ve found that my loss has caused pretty ropey longer term mental health so the tools within it have remained useful.

I agree about the reading from cover to cover, I do tend to dip in and out. I found that writing things down allows me to slow down and look at the issue and that process helps me to change my viewpoint.

I didn't find it that helpful. I found anxiety for.dummies much better.

I can't comment on this book, but there is a national scheme called books on prescription, it is available through public libraries and is a set of books recommended by professionals and evidence based, to help people cope with a range of conditions, mental as well as physical. If I wanted a self help book, I'd choose one of these. You can ask the librarian for the list and just tick what you want.
