What helps a breastfed baby with colic?

Tried infacol and gripe water. Doesn't really work. I've heard colief is good but not really for breast fed babies....any other ideas? I'm doing everything I can for him but he does nothing but cry. He's 8 weeks today

Colimil

KisstheTeapot14 · 29/10/2018 11:38

Good luck OP, we tried a lot of things that didn't work (many from above) hope you strike lucky. We had 4 months, poor DS shrieked and shrieked and it was hellish. Getting out of the house was our best life saver (not as easy with other kids in tow maybe), that and bouncing him in our arms whilst on gym ball. Fingers crossed for you all xxx

The same things that help a formula fed baby with colic Hmm

SlowDown76mph · 29/10/2018 11:40

Is he otherwise thriving? Gaining weight? If not, then you need to see GP/health visitor again. Sometimes for example, it can have a cause like lactose intolerance (human breastmilk contains lactose) or gastric reflux. However I think quite often it is just an immature gastric system, which time will solve, and in the meantime it is about getting through until then and trying anything that will give relief.

bertram drinking fennel tea or excluding things from your diet isn't going to help a ff baby is it...so feeding method is obviously relevant...

drained1 · 29/10/2018 11:47

@Spam88 thanks, there's always one isn't there.

@MrsPatrickDempsey that's definitely interesting reading. And makes sense, dh always tried singing and talking to him when he's trying to settle him. Baby ends up crying even more. I tend to stay quiet and just hold him tight and he settles more easily for me. Overstimulated does make sense in our case.

I have some time towards the end of the week where it is just me and baby so I will give the staying in the bedroom ago and see how it works....

Why are you so dismissive of any advice apart from your own @spam? I have had 3 babies and all three struggled with colic, it did pass eventually with the first two after a few weeks of hell, despite infacol and suchlike. When my 3rd started with it, after 3 days I began drinking fennel tea and the colic stopped like magic. Coincidence? Maybe, but what has the op got to lose?

SilverbytheSea · 29/10/2018 15:57

Bicycle legs after feeding, other than that nothing really gave much relief until about 12 weeks when suddenly he turned into a (mainly) happy baby... I thought he was a different baby lol.

Troika · 29/10/2018 15:58

Bobstersmum I think you have misread Spam’s post. She hasn’t been dismissive of any advice. She was replying to another poster explaining why it was relevant that the baby is breastfed.

Troika · 29/10/2018 16:04

Anyway I was going to say fennel tea seemed to help a bit, but unfortunately for the most part I just had to wait it out.

Actually I thought my third had colic but it disappeared after she had her posterior (previously dismissed) tongue tie snipped at 12 weeks.

bobstersmum · 29/10/2018 16:17

Ok then I apologise

Chwaraeteg · 29/10/2018 16:32

With mine it was cows milk allergy. I had to go dairy free. We didn't know what was wrong until we started weaning. I thought she was just a sicky angry baby.

Errrrrrr · 29/10/2018 16:41

Time was the only thing that helped DS. That and putting him on hus tummy to sleep (I know, I know...) I nearly drove myself crazy trying infacol, dentinox, gripe water, cutting stuff out of my diet, adding stuff into my diet...eventually about 14 weeks it just started to get better. Definitely try stuff but please don't drive yourself crazy, colic is a pain but it's very normal and it will pass one day. Sending sympathy!

Spam88 · 29/10/2018 17:50

Yes bobster you misread my post, I was very much drinking fennel tea myself! I almost didn't hate it in the end...

curlyrebel · 29/10/2018 18:04

My DDs colic drove me crazy OP so I empathise. Gripe water and Infacol didnt help her either.

But I started to wonder if much of the time it wasn't her tummy bothering her but over stimulation and tiredness. Could you try turning off all the lights and perhaps using some white noise (there are free apps out there)? That may help your DC switch off. It must be very overwhelming for lots of newborns.

It's true what they say about colic not lasting more than 3 months so hang in there!

bobstersmum · 29/10/2018 19:14

Sorry again Spam, had a terrible week, same here, its not a pleasant drink but I got used to it!

Beesneeze82 · 29/10/2018 19:19

Cutting out dairy seemed to work for us.
