Should I be applying for Universal Credit or new style ESA

I don't know what I should be applying for, so have applied for Universal Credit. I got through to someone this morning and he said he didn't know which I should be applying for and did my GP not tell me?? I was ringing to book the first UC appointment.
I'm now on hold to the number you never get through to speak to anyone on because he couldn't transfer me, I had to ring again and click on a different option.
How are you supposed to know what you should be applying for? My GP has signed me off sick for 3 months. Anyone know what the difference is?

I have a vague notion that it's dependent on your post code, but the guy I spoke to couldn't enlighten me at all.

If it's a full service area you apply for UC if you live in a live area you don't claim UC.

Hiiiii, have you had any sick pay?

Usually need to totally exhaust company and statutory sick pay and then look at moving on to another benefit.

If you're still employed and likely to go back to work, new style ESA may be the best route. However it's not means tested, so if you're going to need help with housing benefit it's not the best route for you.

If you're the sole earner in your household or your household income is significantly low, you can apply for either old ESA or UC depending on whether you're in a live area. ESA is done over the phone and UC is done online. If you need more details just ask.
