To spend £700 a year on kitchen roll?

Yes, I fucking am?!

WTF, how can I cut down on usage? For my bank balance and the environment! .

In my defence I do have a toddler and a rather large family, but still, go through £2 a day worth of the stuff!

I hate dish cloths, they seem so inefficient and full of bacteria!

Help?! Hints?! Tips?!

I don’t only mean food you are taking out, I said food to go as opposed to food you buy in a supermarket. Much of it is eaten in the restaurant

‘To go’ means to take away with you.
To eat in means to eat it in the restaurant.

If you asked for a pizza etc to go you would be given it to take away and walk down the street eating it.

OnceUponATimeInAmerica · 25/10/2018 20:11

Was a napkin once a WEEK? What the hell is wrong with you people?!

A bib on a toddler might need washing after every meal, but most adults should only be dabbing corners of mouths and probably don't need a napkin except for an evening meal.

Honestly some of the unrealistic 'hygiene' standards on MN are crazy. You don't need perfect starched linen at every meal, any more than you need to go through 2 rolls of kitchen paper every day!

Doubletrouble99 · 25/10/2018 20:25

I make sure my dish cloths are clean by putting them in the dishwasher every night then rinsing them thoroughly in the morning. Not a spot of bacteria on them. I also through them out often. Sorted.

Dontfeellikeaskeleton · 25/10/2018 20:29

Utter madness

19lottie82 · 25/10/2018 20:32

We call it napkins on a roll, in this house 😂

TatianaLarina · 25/10/2018 20:41

To go’ means to take away with you.

I know what it means, it was short hand to differentiate between food you buy to eat straight away whether eat in or take out, and food you buy in a supermarket.

Paper napkins are available in all cafés even if you’re eating in with knife and fork.

Either way, I manage to eat my dinner either at home or out without getting it round my face.

3out · 25/10/2018 20:49

I put napkins out for the kids’ hands/mouths every mealtime. They have decided though that they are inferior to their sleeves and trousers though, so just continue to wipe their fingers there instead. At the end of the day, their clothes go into the washing basket.

TatianaLarina · 25/10/2018 21:07

No-one said anything about round your face.

mildshock · 25/10/2018 21:16

A single kitchen roll lasts us (2 adults, 5 year old, 1 year old) just over a week. Dishcloths to wipe down the sides with some antibacterial, thrown in with whatever wash we do that evening. Every cloth then gets a boil wash weekly.

We have one sheet of kitchen roll or a cloth on the table at meal times, for the children to wipe their hands on. DP and I manage to stay clean. If we have guests, then "naice" cloth napkins are used.

2 rolls a day for cleaning and wiping hands on is obscene. Are you having food fights during every meal??

Efferlunt · 25/10/2018 21:18

Wtaf! I just use the mircofribe cloths which are about 80p for five from Aldi and bung them in the wash. If it’s washed with soap and dried what more is needed? For sticky faces we have a stack of cheap flannels which also get rinsed then bunged in with the general wash.

One or two makes no real difference to the amount of loads I do.

FusionChefGeoff · 25/10/2018 21:20

Why does any adult NEED a napkin at all?? I have mastered the act of eating without getting it all over my face!

HauntedPencil · 25/10/2018 21:26

I use old tea towels to clean after the children have been eating highchair etc

I've got a few in the drawer

TatianaLarina · 25/10/2018 21:26

It’s not about getting anything on your face - how many times does that have to be said.

If you’re eating soup or sauce or a hamburger with ketchup or mayonnaise for example, you dab the excess off your lips. You don’t lick it off, or worse, use the back of your hand.

LightastheBreeze · 25/10/2018 21:30

I just use a tissue out of the box if I need to dab my lips we don’t have napkins.

Pesilica · 25/10/2018 21:33

I never use napkins, if I have soup on my lips I'd just lick it off, to use a napkin just for that feels wasteful.

Nanny0gg · 25/10/2018 21:34

Napkins are for your lap in the first instance.

Then you dab your mouth with one at the end of the meal.

TatianaLarina · 25/10/2018 21:37

Nothing wasteful about napkins that are used every day. They last a hell of a long time, I’ve got napkins that belonged to my great grandmother. It’s much more wasteful to use tissues.

ShirleyPhallus · 25/10/2018 21:40

I cannot believe the number of adults on this thread that eat so messily they need a napkin at every meal time!

😷

LightastheBreeze · 25/10/2018 21:41

I don’t use that many tissues, a box lasts weeks, I’m not permanently dabbing my face.

Pesilica · 25/10/2018 21:42

Just another thing to bung in the wash though! For me it would just feel pointless to have and a bit of a waste to regularly wash something that's used just for that, for me anyway.

Dont have tissues either!

TheSerenDipitY · 25/10/2018 21:46

buy a ton of cheap flannels and in different colours, each day get a couple of the same colour out and throw them in the wash each night
you can also put them in the dishwasher when you run it thru or give a bit of a soak in boiling water, you can put a bit of dishwasher powder (finish?)in too
They dont have to be dirty germ filled clothes, just make sure to give a good rinse after you use and hang over a tap till you need again, or keep a small tub with boiling water and "finish" or napisan ( cloth nappy cleaner) doesnt need to be kept hot all day

TatianaLarina · 25/10/2018 21:48

Nothing to do with eating messily. It’s not good manners to lick your mouth or wipe your mouth on your hand.

I can’t belive the number of people who don’t use napkins, it’s rather ick.

e1y1 · 25/10/2018 21:50

I have tons (at least 60) microfibre cloths, and tea towels, which however many I’ve used that week - all go on a 90 degree wash on their own (cannot bring myself to wash kitchen fabrics with any other laundry).

I’ve costed it to about a £1 apx to put them through a wash/dryer cycle with detergent - so £52 a year - so a massive saving of £648 compared to your method.

I do still use KR for icky stuff (ie cleaning the toilet) but would probably only get through 1 roll a week).
