To buy DS a coat when he doesn't need one?

Money is not exactly flowing, but DD needs new ski suit and DH has a 20% discount for the sports shop near his work. The idea is I'll take the DC there after school, he'll meet us put it on his credit card and drive home together. If we buy only the ski suit, probably our train fare will cancel out the discount.

DS is 142 cm tall. His rain coat is size 140, it's still wearable but is getting on the small side. I thought maybe we should look for one now, but he doesn't actually need it yet. He already has a proper winter coat but it's only showerproof. It would put a strain on the month. But the discount voucher is only valid until the weekend.

Or, I take the DC to the same shop near us (bus fare), but where the offer isn't valid, make them try on everything and tell DH what to buy. then it definitely goes on his card!

Can you get the winter coat done with fabsil?

(Why a winter coat is only showerproof is beyond me. Who designs these things?)

Blanchedupetitpois · 25/10/2018 08:31

Seems mad for you to get the train if it cancels the discount so definitely try on in the shop near you then tell your DH what to buy. If you can afford the cost this month and it means it’s 20% off then get it and he’ll grow into it.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 25/10/2018 08:31

Surely you wait until he needs a new coat and if money is tight then you look for a budget version. Coats from sports shops and coats from Tesco do the same job.

Not sure why anyone would buy a winter coat that is only suitable for showers however. Maybe just buy him an umbrella to use with the coat he already has?

Blanchedupetitpois · 25/10/2018 08:31

*coat

Sirzy · 25/10/2018 08:32

If the new coat probably won’t be worn for a few months and it sounds like it won’t really be a discount then I would hold off for now and wait for a proper sale!

I always get coats in the sales for the next size up and store

SaucyJack · 25/10/2018 08:35

Sounds like an awful lot of faffing for not an amazing discount.

Thenewdoctor · 25/10/2018 08:37

Buy the ski suit on eBay. They’re never half worn anyway.

Unicornandbows · 25/10/2018 08:39

I would look elsewhere for something cheaper

Jimjamjong · 25/10/2018 08:43

Could your DH pick up the snow suit and any suitable coat in your kids size, they try it at home and he can return if they don't suit? No train fare then.

Aviana · 25/10/2018 08:54

It is the budget supermarket sports shop rather than an independent sports shop. It's the cheapest place nearby where I know the quality is decent. Rain coat will eventually go to DD too.

I'd get the bus to the closer one then get DH to buy from the one with the discount. As it's likely your DS will need a new one soon anyway I would get him a bigger one to make the most of discount if finances allow.

AlphaBravo · 25/10/2018 09:03

Just waterproof his coat OP?? Or buy a cheaper one from somewhere else.

We just got DS's ski suit for winter from Barnados 😁 new with tags.

I need to find winter boots now :(

TheFrendo · 25/10/2018 09:04

Buying stuff you don't need costs money. Why do it?

diddl · 25/10/2018 09:07

He doesn't need a coat atm, you don't have the money atm...

hmmwhatatodo · 25/10/2018 09:34

Why do you need a ski suit? A winter coat. A waterproof coat, credits cards. Use eBay.

BigusBumus · 25/10/2018 09:40

My family are dressed head to toe off ebay. Learn how to do it and you will save a fortune! My kids always wore Designer labels as kids and still now at teens. The oldest boy has just today had some True Religion jeans (normally £250) delivered which I got for £18. Then I sell it all again and get my money back. I rarely buy anything from shops. Honestly don't be scared of eBay!!

Aviana · 25/10/2018 09:45

Because she will go skiing! And if last year is anything to go by, she will have to walk through snow in Jan-Feb to get to school, need it for sports lessons (which is sledging when there's snow). Ski coats are generally snow-proof, not rain proof. Plus which, the rain coat will also be needed in the summer when it rains and a winter coat is too thick.

She doesn’t need a new ski suit. She’s younger than 10. A second hand one off eBay would DFR.

If things are that tight you can’t afford a child’s coat, I’d question why you’re going skiing tbh.

Aviana · 25/10/2018 09:52

I’d question why you’re going skiing tbh
Because we are going to stay with the IL's for New Year and they live in the mountains.

What country does sledging for sports lessons? That sounds fun. It does sound like you are spending unnecessarily though. Especially if you are having to use credits cards. Trips to the mountains over new year to go skiing don’t really go hand in hand with having no money.

Thenewdoctor · 25/10/2018 10:15

You can go without going skiing though.

And you can still buy the ski suit second hand.

Doesn’t she have an old one of your DS or another relation that would do?

Thinking of how wellie boots were passed down in my family

Mountain warehouse is your friend here, very good quality and value outdoor wear.

Buying stuff for them to grow into makes sense if you have a discount code to use - as long as you aren't paying interest on a credit card.

Racecardriver · 25/10/2018 10:21

If you are having money problems you should probably buy online of eBay or similar. I buy a lot of stuff new off eBay that is from last season or whatever. Paying to take a train to buy something with a small discount is pretty pointless. Also wondering whether she actually needs to try it on? I just buy my children the next size up. If it doesn’t fit straight away they grow into it eventually.
