To think someone needs to learn how to pronounce Jamal Khashogg’s surname

And then tell everyone else so they start getting it right.

I should start by saying I am not sure what the correct pronounciation is, but I’d like to know. In the last few days I’ve heard it said at least 6 or 7 different ways, some including the K at the beginning, some with an H, some with a soft g at the end, some with a hard g... just different every time I hear it, and I think it’s pretty disrespectful that no-one can figure out how to say his name properly. No it’s not an English name, but I’m sure it’s not that complicated.

His name is Khashoggi with an I. I believe it is pronounced a variety of ways.

If it can't be spelt correctly how on earth can we pronounce it correctly? How do you think his name should be pronounced?

I am not an Arabic speaker, but I was interested in this after hearing several different pronunciations. Apparently it should be pronounced something like Kha-shok-ji, where the first consonant approximates to a Greek chi sound or the 'ch' at the end of loch, the second 'k' is a back of the throat guttural 'k' that doesn't have an exact equivalent in English (represented by the first 'g' in the Anglicised spelling), and the final syllable is 'jee' (with the 'j' represented by the second 'g' in the English spelling). We have this 'hard soft' double consonant with 'cc' in 'accident' and 'occidental' etc but I don't think we have it with 'gg' - only 'suggestion' etc.

Wikipedia lists three different pronuniations of his name - arabic, hejazi arabic and Turkish. Arabic is spoken over a very broad area and although the words are the same, the pronunciation varies regionally. In particular, the J sound near the end can be pronounced either as a soft j or a hard g. I wonder if it is these variations in pronunciations that cause the differing pronunciations. Disclaimer: not an Arabic speaker so I might be way off.

Frustratingly the typo is because I copy/pasted the name to be sure it was spelt correctly, and then accidentally deleted the end i when I added the ‘s. The typo doesn’t change the point I’m trying to make.

Maybe it does have multiple pronounciationa, but surely someone knows how he and his family pronunce it and others should take the time to learn?

Sunset your explaination makes sense, and I’ve heard it said that way a lot, but there’s still a lot of variation.

Given the nature of the news story and what happened to him,the pronunciation of his name seems somewhat unimportant...

QuickPollPlease · 24/10/2018 22:08

Pronounced Ka sho jee (short o).

Completely disagree with pp, we should be taking the time to learn how to say it and we should talk about him and his barbaric death.

A580Hojas · 24/10/2018 22:11

I have been thinking exactly the same as you op.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 24/10/2018 22:33

RabbityMcRabbit I don’t think it’s unimportant at all. The man has died in horrific circumstances, surely he deserves the respect of having his name said correctly?
