I'm so fed up of recipes (usually in a magazine or paper) that have one non-obtainable ingredient. I live in a large city - not London, so maybe that's the problem - and wanted to make a cake, having seen the recipe in the paper.
It required pomegranate syrup. The assistants at the big Sainsburys I went to had never heard of it, but checked, and they didn't stock it. If it's not PS, it's another unusual ingredient.
The trouble is that I have no idea of what it's like, so don't know what to substitute it with.
Yes, I know, a real 1st world problem. but still annoying, as it happens a lot. Mind you, a lot less since I stopped using Ottalenghi recipes.

I have pomegranate molasses. I think it came from waitrose. Or a wholefood type shop .

I like it as a salad dressing.

Misses the point.

I sympathise with your annoyance at recipes with obscure ingredients. I find Nigella Lawson is the same

Sexnotgender · 24/10/2018 13:36

I got pomegranate syrup from Morrison's.

Gingerrogered · 24/10/2018 13:41

You can get it £9.04 next day delivery off amazon.

Eppursimuove · 24/10/2018 17:16

Yes, ages ago I bought (with difficulty) a bottle of agave syrup for a Nigella recipe. used a tbs, then had no idea what to do with it. it's still sitting at the back of the cupboard.

It's always in Turkish supermarkets (often allied "International supermarkets") and cheap!

RhiWrites · 24/10/2018 17:31

I have the opposite problem, was given a bottle as a gift and rarely use it.

OftenHangry · 24/10/2018 17:36

£9 for it Shock No way I would pay that. £3 at most.

OftenHangry · 24/10/2018 17:38

@RhiWrites it goes well rith meat as a part of marinade and I use it on salads. Just a little bit. You can make a drink with it too. Really versatile imho. But then I am used to having it home.

Waitrose, m & s or Amazon next day delivery

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 24/10/2018 17:52

My sympathies , the Hemsley Hemsley book has done this to me!

Iaimtomisbehave1 · 24/10/2018 17:54

You can get that in almost all supermarkets. It's just grenadine. Cocktail section.

Iaimtomisbehave1 · 24/10/2018 17:57

Just reduce the sugar in the recipe to counter the sweetness.

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 24/10/2018 21:40

Waitrose one is £3. It has lots of wanky ingredients!

If you cook recipes in the same style regularly it means you will use it. I discovered harissa paste courtesy of Jamie’s 15 minute meals and love it.
