Anterior Placenta

Hi.. I'm looking for a bit of information.

I have been for my 20 weeks scan today and upon reading my result it states I have anterior placenta..

I know the wider scale of what it means (placenta up front instead of back and not feeling movements as strong etc)

I don't really want to go deep into Google as it normally tells me the worst case scenario and I end up with severe anxiety 🤔

So if you've had anterior placenta.. What did it mean to/for you?

Did you feel any strong movements at all etc.

Also has anyone ended up having to have a c section due to this as this seems to be the bit of info I've picked up online that it can increase the possibility of having to have a section..

Tia x

It doesnt mean anything apart from telling you where the placenta is located. I still feel a lot of movement, no issues there personally, although for others it can make a lot of difference.

I had an anterior placenta with my first DC. I felt very little movement throughout my pregnancy. Unfortunately, I was very anxious, and went to the hospital several times to be checked over by midwives (the last time I did, my waters broke on the bed!) they couldn’t have been kinder to me

I have an anterior placenta, it's about fifty fifty anterior/posterior so very common, doesn't cause any issues. I have still felt very strong movements, people said it feels like butterflies but I think I've got an elephant!

Birdie69 · 24/10/2018 00:37

Anterior just means it's attached to the front of your uterus. There are no "issues" connected with this at all. It's normal. The only time anyone needs a c section due to placental placement, is if it is attached very low / across the cervix , which could lead to bleeding when the cervix starts to open . Yours isn't in that position so you have nothing to worry about.

Nonomore2 · 24/10/2018 00:46

I had one. Didn’t bother me at all. They told me it was very low and I could potentially need a C-section but it moved higher. I didn’t feel movement until 27 weeks though!

OwlBeThere · 24/10/2018 00:58

I did with all 3 of my children, all three were born vaginally with pretty straightforward births. the only thing it meant for me was I didn't ever really feel kicks strongly and had a few times of going in to be checked out due to lack of movements, they were always fine, they were just hiding!

MightyFrightningSpouse · 24/10/2018 01:06

I had this! No problems really - didn't feel movement until 24 weeks and went in two or 3 times for reduced movement but that's it really. I had a c section but not related to the placenta. Good luck in your pregnancy

Catmum26 · 24/10/2018 01:17

i have an anterior placenta and i am 36 weeks pregnant. as long as it isn’t low down and covering the cervix it shouldn’t pose any complications with giving birth. a lot of babies movements haven’t been as strong as i expected and i havent seen him moving much from the outside. up until last week everything was fine but i think now that baby is running out of room his movements are smaller and i’m not feeling them as much so i am having monitoring every other day at the hospital and i will be getting induced before 40 weeks just as a precaution as movements are now hardly felt.

ForLikeEver · 24/10/2018 01:18

Had this with both pregnancies - felt lots of strong kicks (very wriggly babies), no problems at all. Had two c sections, but for unrelated reasons (breech and polyhydramnios).

It’s nothing to worry about - congratulations on your pregnancy!

Limpshade · 24/10/2018 02:02

I had this with DC2. I didn't feel the kicks as early as with DC1 but I definitely did feel them eventually! I had a vaginal delivery, too. Try not to panic!

LuvSmallDogs · 24/10/2018 10:08

I have an anterior placenta this time around (DC3). I started feeling kicks later, and definitely feel them better to the sides/towards the cervix than the front of my belly - those still feel muffled (34 weeks). There are no health risks with a normal anterior placenta, it’s placenta previa that’s the risky one.

EyUpOurKid · 24/10/2018 10:47

I had an anterior placenta. No issues throughout pregnancy. Birth was semi elective section because of DS position/failure to progress.

Only thing I've ever wondered about/anecdotally heard of is that of people I know who had anterior placenta, there were more babies who were back to back.

meow1989 · 24/10/2018 11:07

I had an anterior placenta with DS. It meant nothing to be honest- I felt first kick at 26 weeks and then he didn't stop! Movements were very noticeable for me but sometimes they're not with an anterior placenta I think

Velmasglasses · 24/10/2018 11:10

I'm 36 weeks and have an anterior placenta. I've felt lots of strong movements all through pregnancy. I've not heard of any complications associated with anterior placentas.

Louiselouie0890 · 24/10/2018 11:22

I never worried. Its just there so they can check where it is on scans so it doesn't drop below baby. Had it with both made no difference. Speak to your midwife if you have concerns they'll put you at ease
