James Dyson fought for brexit and was influential in getting people to vote for it. He announced today he is building his electric cars in Singapore. What a knob.

one more reason why people were mugs. how could anyone ever seriously think that a billionaire is ever motivated by anything other than the bottom line?

still, blue passports tho 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Eve · 23/10/2018 10:43

... more fool anyone who believed him...

Theworldisfullofgs · 23/10/2018 10:43

I spend most days face palming. Someone just accused anna soubry of only wanting to protect her eu pension...she's a British mp!

Just because he was pro brexit doesn't mean he has to make a bad business decision and have all his business based here.

Or he could start the new business here to keep the Brexiters happy, pour ££££ into infrastructure/costs that he doesn't have to, go bankrupt and then all those that work for him in Bristol lose their jobs too?

Ohyesiam · 23/10/2018 10:45

About 20 years ago he wanted to fund and create a technical college in Bath. It was for kids years 9 to 13, and he was looking at a Victorian warehouse on the river.
The town council couldn’t see the benefits and wanted the warehouse preserved. They turned down a fantastic opportunity.
He also part funds a studio school outside Bath along with Cambridge university.
He runs degree apprenticeships from his college where the kids get a living wage and loads of industry experience along with their no debt degree.
These are just things o know because they are local to me, but I doubt that’s all he does for the U.K.

Singapore is supposed to be keen to get FTA with UK.
Maybe they only said they were keen to get his factory built there?

Ohyesiam · 23/10/2018 10:47

Sorry no perahraphs, my phone is rubbish

Theworldisfullofgs · 23/10/2018 10:50

All his 'major' investment is outside the UK.
He tinkers in this country.

Where business is concerned, money always wins. The bigger the business and the more money it makes, the sooner such a business tends to forget all moral and ethical questions.

Childrenofthesun · 23/10/2018 10:54

James Dyson doesn't want to have to submit to regulations that protect the environment (hence his fuss about power limits on vacuum cleaners). He is only interested in his own profits. In general, business owners only support Brexit if it will result in the lowering of what they see as costly regulations (environmental, health and safety, workers rights).

FishesaPlenty · 23/10/2018 10:55

Singapore is supposed to be keen to get FTA with UK.

They've already got one - at least until the end of March.

Childrenofthesun · 23/10/2018 10:56

Should add, hence his choice of Singapore, a very low-reg economy. Incidentally Singapore is the dream model for such Brexiters as Jacob Rees-Mogg. And their economy relies very heavily on poorly-paid immigrant workers.....

PawPawNoodle · 23/10/2018 11:00

Didn't realise Singapore was part of the EU!

On a more serious note, he is against the EU single market and favours global trade, which is why he backed Brexit. Manufacturing in Singapore is indicative of this.

He does an awful lot for the people in this country via his foundation but that doesn't mean he needs to make his bloody cars here.

Childrenofthesun · 23/10/2018 11:03

Singapore is not part of the EU. Doesn't stop it from having a painstakingly drawn-up free trade agreement with the EU, as do many, many other countries around the world. Guess who won't have any of these in a few months and will have to start from scratch?

FishesaPlenty · 23/10/2018 11:05

Singapore is supposed to be keen to get FTA with UK.

They've already got one - at least until the end of March.

To correct myself - the EU-Singapore Free Trade Agreement doesn't come into force until some time next year. It's taken over 8 years to negotiate.

So Dyson's Singapore-manufactured electric cars will be able to be exported to the EU tariff-free while UK-manufactured cars probably won't.

Making Britain Great Again.

YeOldeTrout · 23/10/2018 11:05

(you know, sometimes the internet is amazing)

Avg and median salaries in Singapore are WAY higher than UK, Singapore pays the highest manuf. wages in Asia & a lot higher than UK.
He's after the most skilled workers in world, I reckon.

Dyson will say that he chose Singpore coz UK not doing a 'clean' Brexit whereas the citystate* has the trading independence he prefers.

*Singapore has a zillion trade arrangements, very far from trading on WTO terms. "Singapore has the highest trade to GDP ratio in the world (around 400% on average during 2008-11) reflecting its position as a major transhipment hub and the high import intensity of Singapore's exports." (UK trade:GDP ratio is 15% of that, similar to Italy, Canada, France all of which are below the EU average).

Justanotherlurker · 23/10/2018 11:07

Simple super light electric cars are replacing mopeds across South East Asia - and most of them don't meet the complex safety requirements we have.

More economical to move production over there, it would have been the same outcome if we wasn't leaving the EU.

Ifailed · 23/10/2018 11:12

I don''t see what patriotism has got to do with brexit or a billionaire wanting to further line his pockets?

Theworldisfullofgs · 23/10/2018 11:17

Britain is now approaching its own change. If we embrace it, Brexit can supercharge British technology and refocus minds on global trade.

“We are ambitious for our future, so we are pressing ahead under our own steam. Let’s be bold and show a spirit of independence, enterprise and optimism.

“Embracing change and taking a different approach has exciting outcomes. There is scope for Dyson to do even more, if only the Government recognised the opportunity and supported British companies to grow.” James Dyson

Growing in Singapore...

puzzledlady · 23/10/2018 12:10

what wrong with building in singapore? more economical surely?

Backstabbath · 23/10/2018 12:57

Nothing wrong with manufacturing in Singapore, in-fact it's very expensive, however Dyson do not manufacture anything in the UK.

It's ok for James Dyson to support Brexit and say 'no deal' isn't a problem because he doesn't rely on EU parts for his business.

He's coming across as having a bit of an 'I'm alright jack' attitude

florafawna · 23/10/2018 12:58

Dysons are shit now.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 23/10/2018 13:05

James dyson is a nasty slime creature and that has nothing to do with his politics and more to do with the fact that he is happy to share space with Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad
