To think this is a good salary for a 20 something!

21 and earning 30K a year. I think that's pretty decent, is it not? Outside of London too.

My mum thinks not, and says it's very average.

I think she's somewhat deluded. But she insists.

That’s good, but as an EA you should think of going down the senior exec EA route otherwise you’ll not go much above that

Which is reasonable, however, I can't expect to just walk into a senior executive support role with only 4 years experience

Undercoverbanana · 22/10/2018 19:31

What has it got to do with your Mum?

Do you enjoy the job?

Surely that should be her concern?

I’m 50 and on just above NMW, by the way.

topofthedrums · 22/10/2018 19:33

Well it hasn't really got anything to do with my mum, but I've always wanted to impress her. And failed.

DH is 26 and on less, although he's more senior and in a different industry entirely

shinycat · 22/10/2018 19:33

Hmmmm, yeah some companies do pay OK for P.A.s

Sounds a lot with no degree though.

So well done if that's you.

I know several 20-25 y.o. people on £28K to £35K (in the midlands.)

They all have a degree (except the one,) and he has been in his job for 6 years (Civil service.) He is on £31K, and is 24 y.o. Started on an apprenticeship.

countrybunny · 22/10/2018 19:35

Erm yeah that's more than a lot of people's earning potential

Rebecca36 · 22/10/2018 19:35

Not bad for a newbie. Especially if out of London.

burdog · 22/10/2018 19:36

I earn £30k at 34! Half way to a professional qualification to boot!

topofthedrums · 22/10/2018 19:37

shiny I started off as a PA apprentice at 16. Very good English skills, very articulate. But sadly failed didn't even finish the test of all my GCSE's.

Within 6 months the proper 'PA' of the small business resigned and I took her place. They didn't bother replacing her, they liked me that much. Then I moved on to a PA role in London. There for a while. Then had my DC. Now back from maternity and just got offered a new role outside of London on the 30k.

I'm really pleased at how it's turned out since I cried for weeks about my failures. My mum has still never forgiven me for not going to uni though

I'm 34 and have only recently started working in my industry after finishing my degree and only earn £17000 a year. It is a training programme so I earn a % of the actual salary until my training has finished. So in my view £30k is a brilliant salary. It will take me at least 10 years to reach that, if I ever do.

What is your job op?

PattiStanger · 22/10/2018 19:37

£30k is about 10% above the overall average wage so if she thinks it's average for a 21 year old outside London she obviously has little grasp on reality

Amlen · 22/10/2018 19:38

That is very good! Oh how the times must of changed if your mum thinks it's average!

Caprisunorange · 22/10/2018 19:38

Well a 21 year old would be barely finished with a degree so I don’t think that’s a fair comparison- Op presumably has 3-5 years work experience on them.

It’s a great wage for your age OP. Ignore your mum. How much did she earn at 21?!

Want4dayhelp · 22/10/2018 19:39

Cross post.

How sad that your mam isn't proud of you op Flowers I would be incredibly proud of myself if I was you. Well done for working so hard. Don't let your mother's opinion bring you down.

Mummyoflittledragon · 22/10/2018 19:39

That’s extremely good for your age. Your mother sounds very bitter.

FourRingsQ2 · 22/10/2018 19:42

This is your second thread, bragging about how much money you're earning. What is that about?!

topofthedrums · 22/10/2018 19:44

Four Did you read the last thread? It was very focused on the relationship I have with my mum and wondering how to deal with parents who never think you're good enough, no matter what you do

Nothing to do with particulars. I'm not bragging, but you'd be surprised how much a parent can make you feel so small and unworthy of anything.

It's shit.

OP posts:
Xenia · 22/10/2018 19:44

Why does it matter to her anyway? My graduate son earns less driving a van. He's happy. I'm happy. his lawyer sisters wll be closer to £100k. We all just make different choices in life and having £30k or £20k or £100k does not really co-relate to personal happiness at all although I suppose the higher salaries mean people are less likely to be on how to spend less money threads. At 21 I had only just finished law post grad and started on £6250 a year (although that was a long time ago)

Mumofonemonster · 22/10/2018 19:45

I get £25.5k on long term high rate disability benefits (plus 8k additional income from other sources) so its not amazing but a great start for a kid your age. Well done!

LellyMcKelly · 22/10/2018 19:46

I’m a 51 yo university lecturer with 3 degrees and I’m just about hitting £40k in the south east, so yes, your salary at your age is fantastic. Take a look at what training they can offer you. Lots of places pay the apprenticeship levy so they might be interested in putting you through a degree apprenticeship part time in something relevant to your job - like business management. That way you get a degree, an apprenticeship, and you continue to earn and gain relevant experience.

spanishwife · 22/10/2018 19:47

30k for a PA role outside of London sounds like a lot to me...

PurpleOctober · 22/10/2018 19:47

A boasting thread in disguise?

I'm in my late 20s and most people I know my age earn between £20-25k (outside London).

I don't even know of any jobs that pay £30k without any experience or skills.

oblada · 22/10/2018 19:48

thats a great start! i started at 22k when i was 23yrs old, im 33 now and on 43k so im pleased. and of course every job is different, if you like your job and you are happy with the pay then great. DH started at 25k at 26yrs old after Phd, now on 50k at 36yrs old.

Well done!!! Sound great for a 21yo :)

@3out , come to New York! Nurses have their pick of jobs here and the money shows it.
