To think the LOL dolls are taking the piss????

I mean, if £10 on a pathetic plastic ball with the ugliest doll in it isn't enough, DD now has her heart set on the dolls house that's been designed for them - basically it's a tacky looking dolls house that is £179!!!!!!!!!!! They reel the kids in and then leave us to be the villain when I say it's too much!!!!! AND I keep stepping on the little bastard accessories! I'm trying to let her down gently by saying that Father Christmas won't be able to carry it on his sleigh but I think I'm in for a disappointed DD on Christmas morning......... Angry

Bastard dolls!

Ive seen some handmade houses which might be a nice idea? And lots cheaper

Ellisandra · 22/10/2018 19:17

Caprisunorange - not the YouTube my daughter watches! (Sims4 and Harry Potter fab theories mostly!)
I’m sure there are loads of dull LOL videos but I think YouTube is easier to control than commercial TV for kids. I just mentioned YouTube because I didn’t want OP to think I was being a smug po faced anti-screens mum Grin

WhirlwindHugs · 22/10/2018 19:17

I won't buy them at all.

It's taking the piss how expensive they are and I won't be part of making it 'everyone has them' blah blah. Nope, my kids don't!

PhilomenaDeathsHeadHawkMoth · 22/10/2018 19:19

I'm so pleased that DD grew out of that stage before LOL dolls existed.

mumtomaxwell · 22/10/2018 19:19

I am blessed with a child like yumyum’s. Asked for her birthday, got one from a friend... opened it and played with it for about 5 mins! Hasn’t been touched since!!

I was dreading her falling in love and wanting the huge house! Instead she wants more Sylvanian bits which are also overpriced shite

StarShapedWindow · 22/10/2018 19:24

I agree, I think LOL dolls are really awful. My DD doesn’t watch adverts but loves YouTube and had seen the LOL Surprise unwrapped by ‘Tiana’ on YouTube. I bought her one for her Birthday (£65), it was mainly packaging but the actual dolls - what a lot of rubbish. There was so much packaging DD got bored of opening it, half way through I said ‘it’s not very good is it?’ she said ‘no, it’s really rubbish’. I know a lot of toys are rubbish and I know most things are wrapped in plastic but LOL really flout the movement to use less plastic. I understand the pressures to buy DC what they want so I’m not against parents buying them but I am against the company the makes them.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 22/10/2018 20:53

Even if you keep them away from children's TV they still find out about these things once they start school. DD(5) only watches Cbeebies or Netflix, so no adverts, and she doesn't have access to YouTube. Still comes home from school talking about Lol dolls, Hatchimals, all that crap. She hasn't mentioned the house yet, thank fuck.

RedDrink · 22/10/2018 21:05

How do you keep kids from liking shitty toys? Mine can't talk, walk, or point yet so maybe there's still hope. 😏

ladyvimes · 22/10/2018 21:18

There’s a really good phrase I use with my children that’s really useful: “No, that’s too expensive, what else do you want?” Works every time.
My dd loves lol dolls and plays with them all the time but I’m not spending £176 on a dolls house no matter how much she wants it. Total waste of money.

Dollygirl2008 · 22/10/2018 21:28

I know ladyvimes - my dd does play with them a lot but I still can't justify spending that much money! We are going to a big toy superstore next week so I'm
Hoping she'll find some other ideas!

Caprisunorange · 22/10/2018 21:43

To be honest they’re prettt good value for money considering how much she plays with them/ enjoys them, compared to something like a baby Annabel which is like £40 and didn’t elicit as much joy for as long

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 22/10/2018 21:45

My dd has asked for lol dolls for Christmas and loved the house in the catalogue. I said no it's far too expensive and too heavy for Santa.

I've got her the Hobby craft colour your own dolls house (£8.50) with glittery pens and lol doll stickers. Might even get some of those stick on diamontes from the pound shop. All in will cost less than £15 and will keep her occupied for hours - designing and playing with it. Might even get some furniture and wrap individually in tissue paper then make a moving truck from cardboard.

VenusClapTrap · 22/10/2018 21:55

I’ve never heard of these things. Dd, who is 8, has never mentioned them, and I’ve not seen any of her friends playing with them or talking about them either. It’s by no means inevitable that kids demand stuff like this.

Caprisunorange · 22/10/2018 21:55

8 is far to old to be playing with them though

Caprisunorange · 22/10/2018 21:56

Posted too soon-much younger children are the audience. My DD is 3!

Nicknacky · 22/10/2018 21:58

I would say the main age group into this is about 4/5/6. I also think 8 wouldn’t be interested in them.

makingmiracles · 22/10/2018 22:01

Meh, preordered dds back in the summer hols, glad I did as they are near impossible to get hold of now unless you want to pay stupid eBay prices. Yes it’s a lot for a dolls house, but the box is huge, the house is wooden not plastic and all the furniture is included, it also comes with doll, lil sis and a pet so arOund £26 worth of dolls, so you could say the house is techniquely £155.

A lot for one present but she’s not getting a lot else, it will be her main present.

If you don’t want to buy though or can’t get hold of one, plenty of places sell wooden doll houses or eBay and use lol stickers, wrapping paper etc to line the walls, think there’s a fb group dedicated to the making of diy lol houses.

JustAskingForAFriend · 22/10/2018 22:07

Get her to wrote down a list and say santa picks the item he thinks is best off it.. She'll then love whatever because a. She's asked for it and b. Santa thinks it's the best

Dollygirl2008 · 22/10/2018 22:10

Caprisunorange - the youtube vlogs are full of older girls having LOL reveal parties!

Hahaha my DD is 10 - all her friends are into them as well!! Part of me wants to encourage them still being "children" - plenty of time for them to join the techno era!

keepingbees · 22/10/2018 22:22

I'm a member of some LOL doll groups on Facebook (don't ask me why) and there's quite a thing for making your own LOL dolls houses by blinging up a bog standard cheap dolls house. Might be worth a look?
Yes I agree the whole LOL thing is a total rip off. Some people in those groups spend obscene amounts of money on them too trying to get the rare ones.

Believeitornot · 22/10/2018 22:25

We redecorated the existing dolls house. Dd knows she’s not getting the official house.

I’m the parent, I say no!

She is getting the pop up store though which I got for £30 after pairing up with friends during the Argos 3 for 2.

TheMonkeyMummy · 22/10/2018 22:27

They are awful things.

I tell my kids that Santa checks with us and we get to veto. They know about plastic damaging the environment which gets me out of a lot of things. Sometimes I say I don't like whatever it is and as the parent, I get the final say. They don't go on about it after that.

VenusClapTrap · 22/10/2018 22:45

Well surely if the target audience is 3/4 year olds it’s pretty easy to control what advertising they are exposed to. And also pretty easy to say no to them if they ask for plasticky junk.

toastedbeagle · 22/10/2018 22:50

My daughter has asked for this too... I said no, not because we can't afford it, but we have nowhere to put it!! I've said she can get rid of her wooden dolls house / glitter glider castle / my little pony castle and have this instead, which I could probably sell and make it cost and space neutral... waiting to see what she says.

She loves LOL. Had to make her a cake already this year!

To think the LOL dolls are taking the piss????
liquidrevolution · 22/10/2018 22:56

DD is 4.3 and doesn't know what they are. She watches CBeebies and dvds so no adverts and like hell am I going to show her a toy catalogue. Next year I suspect there will be more peer pressure at school.

It helps that she knows Santa only brings small gifts in a sack and mummy and daddy buy the larger ones.
