AIBU to ask for tips for long haul flights with 8mo

DP and i are flying from the uk to Australia on Tuesday evening with almost 8 mo DS (gulp). Aibu to ask for tips from anyone who has done similar?

My main worry at the moment (aside from a decided lack of sleep) is what to do with milk. DS Has been bottle fed from 6 months so I’m not sure how sterilising bottles will work throughout the 27 hour journey? I have booked to pick up instant bottles of milk past security from departures in the uk airport but it’s just occurred to me that we’ll have to go through security when we change over at Dubai and I’m having a panic about the milk being taken off us and not being able to get the same milk in dubai? Has anyone done a similar journey with a bottle fed baby- how did you manage it?

Ask the people at boots to seal all milk cartons that you don't need to use during the flight in a tamper proof bag it will be fine, plus last time I transited through Dubai I had the same worries and they never even looked at it! The flight will be fine, have you asked for a bassinet? If not see if still any available when you check in as great to have somewhere for them to sleep instead of on you. Take lots of little snacks that you can bring out to distract when necessary. And try and relax - it will be fine honestly!

Oh just saw only 7 months so not sure how much use snacks will be depending on how far you are with weaning sorry! With sterilising, can you just take enough empty sterilised bottles to last you the journey itself then wash and sterilise on arrival?

they ususally allow baby milk thru security outwith the 100ml restriction but only enough for the journey

Hi!
I asked the same question a few months back as we are off to Australia next Sunday.
Our twins are 9 months but I got some fabulous tips from others.

Good luck 😊

Also, all my research shows even in Dubai you can take as much milk through security that you need for the journey as long as baby is with you.

If you need to steralise in transit or even on the plane then take a clip lock plastic box (one with a plastic seal inside to prevent spilage), milton steralisation tablets.

Just sterilise all your bottles in advance and then take the milk cartons and pour in when he’s ready for a feed. Yes it will be (just) over 24 hours but once put together you won’t open the bottles to allow germs and besides, post 6 months you’re really sterilising to kill any bugs in the milk powder which doesn’t apply with ready made formula. You really don’t need to worry about trying to sterilise bottles mid-flight! And I’ve never transferred through Dubai with a baby but I’m sure you’ll be fine with the formula as long as it’s a reasonable amount for the journey. Also yes to baby snacks and the bassinet seats if he’ll fit.

I did the same journey earlier on in the year with an 8 month old who has a milk allergy. We had to take all milk and food for flight and first couple of days in oz with us as shops were going to be closed as it was a bank holiday. In Dubai they didn’t even take a look at it just waved us through both out and inbound. We took about 4 bottles and that was enough. One thing I’d say is take food/jars as they only offer small (4month plus size) jars of food on each flight so that may not be enough for your child.
I won’t say about our journey and sleep as dd’s milk allergy made her very difficult at the time.
Her skin dried out a lot on the flight so I’d suggest some aveeno or child’s farm cream just in case. Again that could have been cause of her issues.
If you’re worried about sterilizing Milton do a single bottle sterilizer so that may put your mind at rest.
If your flying Emirates they gave my elder child a mini etch a sketch thing which dd enjoyed and was good as she couldn’t drop the pen.

I did a similar flight and it was fine. LO slepy the entire time practically. I took through milk etc and nothing was taken or emptied. On the plane they gave me boiling water for cleaning bottles and baby food (they gave me a massive selection so he could have what he wanted when he woke up). I worried about nothing
