To be terrified of weigh in on monday

poptartprincess · 20/10/2018 21:46

I started slimming world this Monday, and im extremely overweight (bmi 44.1). I've been completely on plan all week, most days sticking to 4 or less syns. But today I had 14 and I feel so guilty and that I've messed up my weigh in. I can't handle seeing the scales go up again and I just feel awful using my syns at all. Will this have messed it up?

Because of my size I get 20 syns a day. I've had 35ish syns this week. I don't know if I can save them. Ive planned in a long walk tomorrow to try and make up for tonight. I hope I've lost atleast 0.5lbs. I've been logging my calories on MyFitnessPal too.

I'm a sw member and have waaaay more syns than you a day (some days more than my allowance) and I've lost almost a stone in a month. Get weighed I can almost guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised xx

Fluffyears · 20/10/2018 22:26

5-15 subs are there to be used and I have better losses when I use my syns which is a bit weird. Lots of water and speed food and remember SlimmingWorld is no guilt. We are human we have blips (although yours is fine) our bodies do weird things.

Almostthere15 · 20/10/2018 22:27

It's absolutely fine (and actually good) to eat your Syns. I wish they had a better name though as it encourages the guilt/shame.

If you're going for a lifestyle change you need to be able to eat treats, else the changes won't stick. So please don't best yourself up. I bet you've done well

MagicKeysToAsda · 20/10/2018 22:31

When I started I was allowed up to 20 too (gives you an idea of my starting BMI). I ate them all, every day! I lost weight almost every week, and have continued to eat 15 most days now that I'm down to that allowance. Five stone off so far. Food is not banned - have small portions of the foods that you enjoy but are highly calorific, just make sure the majority of your food is healthy and nourishing. You'll find your balance, but you can't figure everything out all in your first week! Sure Monday will go well for you Smile

fieryginger · 20/10/2018 22:34

My advice is - don't let this wobble stop you, start again tomorrow. I failed at dieting so many times thinking "well that's it then....". Don't think that way. You're going to have bad days, everyone is.

I don't like slimming clubs but it can make you feel accountable, it shakes you really - that's what I don't like about it, but for many people, that's motivation in itself, that dread of doing badly.

You might be pleasantly surprised op.

PlaydoughBarbershop · 20/10/2018 23:05

I joined a week before my birthday. Had 4 days on plan, a day off where I had a nice meal and some wine, and then carried on for the next 3 days, using 5-8 syns a day. Lost 6lb in my first week. You will smash it... honestly. Can't wait to hear how you get on!!!

Cheby · 20/10/2018 23:15

You’ll have lost at least 5lb, I’m sure. I was on 25 syns a day when I first started (although I suspect my consultant got that wrong because I’m in a new group now and new consultant disagrees 😂). Anyway, I stuck to around 15-20 syns a day, and I had 3 HEA because I’m breastfeeding. I lost 5.5lbs in the first week. My DH ate the same as me but no extra HEA, and he lost 10lb.

If you have genuinely stuck to your syns like you’ve said, you’ll have smashed it.

I’m 8 months in and 4.5 st down now. Had a wobble in the middle where I couldn’t find a group to fit around work, stayed the same for months, found a new group and I’m another stone down.

But I think it’s important that you relax a bit. You probably will after you start seeing the scales move. If you restrict yourself too much, it won’t be sustainable. You’ll end up finding it too much and then risk jacking it in.
Sounds like you’re doing really well though. I’m sure Monday will be fine.

Babybearsporij · 20/10/2018 23:58

I think it's the word "syn" messing with your head. I know they say it doesn't mean "sin, bad, terrible" etc but it sounds the same!

ImperfectPirouette · 21/10/2018 00:14

Oh OP... it worries me that you're undereating by so much & that you're struggling with some very unhealthy thoughts.

As PPs have said, drastically cutting your food intake isn't a good idea. You need to eat. You deserve to eat. And you're absolutely "allowed" to have "treat" foods - the key being that they are occasional treats, eaten in moderation. I do understand that buying & storing things might need careful planning if you have issues with binging, but if you can get a chocolate bar or piece of cake or small bag of crisps (or whatever) you should absolutely fit it into your plan & eat & enjoy. We are meant to have a certain amount of fat, salt & sugar in our diet; & there are foods we should eat more of & less of, not a good/bad split.

OP, please would you consider going to your GP & talking to them about what's going on? Eating disorders aren't about the food, they're about the feelings - & they're also not about how much you weigh. If you don't feel able to talk to your GP, please try contacting Beat Eating Disorders &/or Overeaters Anonymous (they provide support for people with all forms of eating disorder) to seek help & advice.

Unfortunately it sounds as if you're not currently equipped for safe & healthy weightloss; & need more support than SW can offer.

Please be gentle with yourself OP Flowers

If you're allowed 20 syns a day, then they are there to be spent however you want. They are there to use so you don't deprive yourself too much and go completely off track. Don't feel guilty, use them as you want to. You should try to use a minimum of 5 syns a day, that's what my consultant always advises. The stricter you are the more likely you are to binge and fall totally off the wagon. As you're at the beginning of your journey you'll be surprised at how much you can lose in a week even with an off day. We all have horrific weeks where we are scared to jump on the scales but majority of the time it's in our minds and it's not as bad as we think. I'm sure you'll be absolutely fine and if you've pretty much stuck to plan all week I'm sure you'll see your hard work on the scales! Let us know how you get on!

psychomath · 21/10/2018 01:05

I don't know anything about slimming world or how 'syns' work, but if you've overdone it by one cookie all week then you really don't need to worry. Your body doesn't magic up mass out of thin air - the absolute most weight you could possibly have put on from eating one cookie is the weight of the cookie itself, which can't be more than about 75g, plus maybe a little bit of water weight because eating sugary foods makes you thirsty. And in practice you won't actually have gained anything, because it sounds like you've been eating under your limit the rest of the week, so all the cookie will have done is cancelled out a minuscule fraction of your total weight loss. It won't even register on the scale, honestly Smile

Healthy eating is something that a lot of people seem to find confusing, probably because there's so much conflicting information out there, but when it comes to weight loss it's actually pretty simple - it's just to do with how much energy is in the food and how your body stores it. If you eat food and your body doesn't need all the energy that you get from it, it assimilates some of the 'food material' (for want of a better term) instead of pooing it out or converting it to carbon dioxide that you breathe out. Things that are high in fat and sugar have more energy per gram, so you're less likely to use up all the energy in them and your body is more likely to store some of the material. But you're not going to put on masses of weight from having a small snack that's high in sugar or 'bad fats', or even from one massive blowout meal, provided you eat sensibly most of the time. Significant weight gain comes from overeating regularly over a long period of time, not from a single treat whacking the pounds on.

Congrats @poptartprincess 😀 that's an amazing start, you should be very proud of yourself. Well done!

GreenMeerkat · 22/10/2018 18:31

Knew it!

Well done @poptartprincess xx

CottonSock · 22/10/2018 18:35

Well done. There are some lovely friendly Facebook groups you can join for encouragement. You will see there that people still have treats and lose.
I don't follow the plan exactly. But love the recipies

anappleadaykeeps · 22/10/2018 18:38

Just seen your update - well done that's fab!!!

Sirzy · 22/10/2018 18:40

Well done!

One of the key things to make any change in eating habits sustainable is to try to learn not to feel guilty, if you have a “blip” (and it doesn’t sounds like you actually did!) then you need to learn to move on without beating yourself up.

My sW consultants uses the analogy of if you have 7 roses and one dies you just remove the dead one and enjoy the other six not throw them all away!

SW works well for me. (Better than anything else I've tried.) I always use all 15 syns every day as i find it easier to stick to and i still lose weight. It won't have harmed your weight loss at all and I'd consider using all 15 syns more often to make it easier to stick to.

BunnyCake · 30/10/2018 14:10

Sorry seen you can have 20 not 15. I bet you will be surprised how well you've done.

BunnyCake · 30/10/2018 14:11

Yay! Well done on the 6 lb lossFlowers

PinkHeart5914 · 30/10/2018 14:51

Wow 6lbs off is great!

The one good thing about being “bigger” is the weight does come off quicker than if your struggling to lose say a stone.

Also don’t ever feel guilty about 1 cookie or 1 chcolate becuase 1 of something will not make you gain weight provided you get well the rest of the time. Cookies and stuff are only bad is you over eat them like with anything

thecatsthecats · 30/10/2018 14:55

Small gains and setbacks are part of the weight loss process.

I will no doubt have had a catastrophic month (by which I mean a swing from -4 to maybe 0 or +1). I was hitting a plateau, and we'd switched up my routine at the gym and my diet to a weights one. Then I got badly sick and was too dizzy to go to the gym at all for 1.5 weeks, and worked out lightly for another 1.5.

But this needs to be treated as it is: a blip. A recoverable one too.

poodlespoodles · 02/11/2018 08:42

Well done!
