Having a child when I didn't know....

... how repeat prescriptions work? I had to ring my mum the other day and ask. I was far too embarrassed to admit to the receptionist and be overheard by everyone in the waiting room. I'm mid twenties with a fiancé mortgage and pregnant. I just feel I should know these things!

I'm also the user who posted whether to heat leftover spag Bol before making a lasagne or not.

Please someone tell me it's not just me with these issues?! Tell me the most trivial thing you've rang your mum for as an adult!

I definitely still ring my Mum for things like this too. Also mid twenties married and pregnant. I’m hoping by the time my baby is mid 20’s herself I’ll finally know the answers myself!

Unhappyandmiddleaged · 20/10/2018 21:35

Ach that's fine. My DD is 26 and texts me about stuff she doesn't know. She was thrilled recently when I text her with a baking query as she is a great baker. She couldn't believe she knew something I didn't!

John4703 · 20/10/2018 21:36

A few years ago I worked on an NHS helpline about prescription charges and such.
I was asked questions that were very basic, and some very complex. I'd say that most people do not understand how such things work until they have to use them. You might find that your pharmacist is your new best friend as he or she is an expert regarding prescriptions and probably knows the local GP's rules.

Starlight345 · 20/10/2018 21:39

I have an 11 year old Ds and often don’t know the answer to many things. I tell him we are all learning.

If you haven’t used the system how would you know.

Ohyesiam · 20/10/2018 21:40

I’m 52 and I don’t know how repeat prescriptions work.

PoxAlert · 20/10/2018 21:44

Nah you're fine.

If you've not had a repeat before then you'd no reason to know.

I'll be on my repeat prescriptions for life, and if it helps the rules seem to bloody change every now and again anyway so even 6 years in to 3 monthly repeats I'm still not 100% how they work......

And better to be safe than sorry with reheating meat.

littlebillie · 20/10/2018 21:45

I think being adult enough to admit it is very sensible many people blag through life.

IStandWithPosie · 20/10/2018 21:46

I don’t know how repeat prescriptions work either and I’m a mother of a teenager!

PinkBuffalo · 20/10/2018 21:50

I think that's fair enough you asking your mum.
I am alone and only just into my 30s. I had a letter come through I needed advice on, and luckily I am good friends with a colleague who has daughters my age. I asked if she could have a look and we had a chat about it!
Most people don't mind and are happy to help if they can Smile

Ifihadapoundd · 20/10/2018 21:54

I'm mid twenty's about to have my second child and ring my mum a least once a day 😂

Stephisaur · 20/10/2018 22:01

I call my mum and ask her where to find things in the supermarket.

My mum has to ask my husband how repeat prescription worked because he’s used to them with his asthma, but at 57 she had never needed one.

Happygummibear · 20/10/2018 22:14

Scrambled eggs.... still can't make the bastard things.... ring my mum... still mess it up....

Dd only has scrambled eggs if dm visits or dh fancies doing it ....

Deepbreathsbabe · 20/10/2018 22:21

I am terrible for taking my meds, purely because I have no idea how repeats work. I will take the whole lot after the go prescribes but when I run out, I just stop taking them. My husband always moans at me because I pretend that I forgot because I don't want to admit the real reason. 🙈 Married, mortgage, two kids and absolutely no idea.

I'm a lost cause.

Howhot · 20/10/2018 22:26

I still need my mum for loads. I'm pregnant with no.2 and moved out 5.5 years ago but I'm taking her carpet shopping with me next week because I feel like I need a real grown up there

Tiredtomybones · 20/10/2018 22:27

DS has 4 regular repeat prescriptions so I do know what I'm doing there, but I did ring my DM today to ask her how to transport something I'd cooked that was to be eaten 3 hours later. I felt a little bit foolish but I knew I'd panic if if hadn't checked.

Pleasedontdrawonyoursister · 20/10/2018 22:32

I always reheat the leftover spag Bol before making lasagne... is that right?? misses point of thread

I’m 30 and still ask my parents random life admin questions all the time Grin

KathyBates · 21/10/2018 00:36

Can someone explain how they work? I'm curious now! 😂

Freshprincess · 21/10/2018 00:49

I only know how they work As DS has one for allergies so I know about repeat prescriptions.

I took my dad car shopping with me because i didn't know what I was looking for and I didn't understand the whole loans/finance/balloon payments thing. He can also talk for England so I knew the salesman would get fed up of the car chat before he did and he's a compete cf with no shame so I wouldn't pay a penny more than I had to.

You don't know what you don't know.

PinkCalluna · 21/10/2018 00:57

If you take a long term medication then the doctor will often put it “on repeat”. It means you don’t have to visit the doctor every time you run out.

When your current supply is due to run out you submit a repeat prescription request to your GPs.

There are different ways to do this depending on your surgery. Ours takes them via an online form but there’s also a box at the reception desk - you just tick the “repeat” box on your prescription form or write a note with your name and address and exactly what you need.

The receptionist will double check with the GP that the request can be approved and if it is they’ll send the prescription to your pharmacy within an agreed time period.

If the GP doesn’t want to approve the repeat prescription for some reason (eg they want you to have a blood pressure check or bloods done) the receptionist will contact you and ask you to make an appointment.

Your receptionist will quite happily explain the process. Alternatively the Practice website will usually provide relevant info about acceptable method of request and timescales.

MaureenMLove · 21/10/2018 00:57

Well I'm nearly 51 OP and have been collecting my diabetes medication on a repeat prescription for about 5 years and I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to do!

Fatasfook · 21/10/2018 00:59

Google. Ffs

elliejjtiny · 21/10/2018 01:07

Yanbu. I've had the same playlist on my iPod since my dad died because I always used to phone him and ask for help when I wanted to change it. I phone my mum and my mil with cooking questions probably once a week.

BlueBug45 · 21/10/2018 01:12

To be fair I only learnt how repeat prescriptions worked because I read my GP practice's website.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 21/10/2018 01:25

I’m 47 and have no idea what a repeat prescription is or how it works?

TOADfan · 21/10/2018 01:35

I'm hoping that it is different in England because I don't understand why people don't understand repeat prescriptions?!

Your medication is running out and you call the doctors recorded line and order another one and you pick it up the next day.

Though we have it easy now cos we have boots order ours in and they text us when ready to pick up. So we don't even need to remember.

I don't know if no prescription charges change anything.
