Has anyone had issue with the child friendly credit card?

I wouldn't pay for a card when they can get a debit card from age 11. Do they really need one before then?

StoorieHoose · 20/10/2018 18:26

DD has had a few issues with the contactless on her go Henry. I’m going to get her a normal bank account so that she can access Apple Pay soon though

Sharingplatter · 20/10/2018 18:34

My children both have go Henry, my eldest for years. Never had a problem with it in fact I find it excellent logs what they spend and you can putt limits on and earning/savings etc. Card itself is free and free to load

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/10/2018 18:35

Nope. DD has it. And it's not a credit (or debit) card it's a prepay.

TSSDNCOP · 20/10/2018 18:40

We just got one. There are many things I like but I misread the instructions and sent DS off to use it the first time without the PIN which then enables contactless.

Their CS were excellent!

Love that you can cap spending, love that you can customise them.

My issue is the high charges.

You can get free prepaid cards which seem better value.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 20/10/2018 19:02

I jut can't understand why I'd pay £3 a month for something you can get for free elsewhere.

ohnothanks · 20/10/2018 19:43

^ what holly... says

Who does the free prepays for wee kids?

dementedpixie · 20/10/2018 20:22

Why would you need it for wee kids? 11 is plenty young enough for a (free) debit card

youngestisapsycho · 20/10/2018 20:26

What’s the difference between a pre pay and a normal debit card that you’ve put money in their account?

dementedpixie · 20/10/2018 20:28

Pre pay normally has charges involved. Current account with debit card has no charges

TheSconeOfStone · 20/10/2018 20:31

Some of my friends kids have them. I just waited until DD was 11 and took her to the bank to get an account with debit card, not only free but reasonable interest rate on savings.

Justabadwife · 20/10/2018 20:38

Dd (9) loves her go Henry.
I stick her pocket money on it, or just some spending money if we are going out. Really easy to do. My phone pings as soon as she has spent something. It's easier than her having cash, as I don't always have cash to give her.
She can't get a card at 11 with the building society we are with, and tbh it's only £3 a month.

ohnothanks · 20/10/2018 20:43

Nip on over to go compare or MSE. There are tens of free prepaid cards albeit the applicant needs to be over 18. Just apply and give child card ....

Gammeldragz · 20/10/2018 20:45

Mine don't go shopping alone until they are secondary age anyway so I really don't see the point in paying £3 a month for something like this when they only get £10 pocket money!

ohnothanks · 20/10/2018 20:47

That is as long as they dont need cash withdrawals. Most prepaid cards have ATM fees.
Personally I think Go Henry is a poor business model because once they are of an age to go off on their own (11) they can have a current acct.

stopitandtidyupp · 20/10/2018 20:51

My ex has it for his 3 daughters. They live with their mum. So he found it easier
than settling up an account.
He can see all their accounts together transfer quickly and it instantly notifies you if it's used by text.

Howdoyoudoit31 · 20/10/2018 20:59

I applied for one today for my daughter. She’s 7 and gets pocket money and money for spellings so il see how much it gets used as it’s free for the first month

Earslaps · 20/10/2018 21:00

I considered it or an alternative but decided the fees were far too high compared to the amount of pocket money they get.

So we use the Rooster Money app to keep track of their money instead. It's free and everyone in the family can load it on their devices with children only able to view.

Once my children are 11 we'll get them a bank account with a debit card and their banking app on their iPod.

You obviously haven't the seen the pain in the checkout assistants face as a 6 year old laboriously counts out 20ps and coppers to pay for £3.50 worth of goods, especially when she keeps losing count Grin

Angrybird345 · 20/10/2018 21:34

Osper is better and cheaper.
