WIBU to apply for a new job within a fortnight of starting this one?

Without being too descriptive, I’m currently earning just below minimum wage (I’m sitting a L1 Functional skills course in maths despite holding the same subject at gcse and alevel, so I am an apprentice apparently. I didn’t know this at the start, and was expecting better pay) I I have seen a job come up within our Trust that I am perfectly qualified for (very niche area)
If I applied and was successful I would be on 20900, rising to about 25,000 by the end of 2021, with brilliant career progression possibilities and work in the area I trained for and am passionate about.
Is it a really twatty thing to leave a job so soon. I live in an expensive area, and need to maintain a car for work, as well as pay off a small debt (I know I shouldn’t have debt but needs must) I was unemployed for a few months and used cc for food. My current salary doesn’t cover my rent or bills but I feel so conflicted about it all like I’m cheating and letting people down

Your current salary doesn’t cover your rent or bills. You need to go for the other job.

How come you weren’t aware of the starting salary?

Alfie19 · 20/10/2018 07:48

How did you take a job without knowing the salary? That has literally never happened to me, even when I was 12 and took my first paper round.

errorofjudgement · 20/10/2018 07:49

Definitely apply for the new job, and if you’re already in the company can you go and see (or phone) the manager of the new role to discuss the job (and your skills) before applying?

filka · 20/10/2018 07:50

Nobody can think it unreasonable to apply for a better job than the one you are in now, especially if you have the right qualifications for it.

Heratnumber7 · 20/10/2018 07:58

Why are you doing the maths course if you have an A level in the subject?

And why did they give you the job if they'd read your CV? They must have realised you're over qualified and therefore likely to not stay long.

People change jobs quickly all the time, so definitely go for the other job, and keep looking if you don't get it. Don't leave your current, badly paid job though until you find something else. Min wage is better than no wage.

Thanks all, I went for an entry level job as a foot in the door at this organisation. And I knew this new job would come up eventually but was expecting it in a matter months/years as opposed to days/weeks.
I’m doing the FS course as it is a requirement to have it or an equivalent for entry level posts - apparently gcse and a love aren’t appropriate equivalents? (I’ve taught in schools and honestly as far as I knew they were)
This is where the pay disparity comes in, I should be on 4K a year more once I finish it, and assumed that, I would be on the higher salary to start BECAUSE I HAVE THE BLOODY EQUIVALENT TO ENTRY LEVEL MATHS.
And I can’t even do the sodding course quickly as I’ve got to be part of a college cohort and do it at their pace. 1 year.
I would still be only on 17k once I finish the maths so would be better off in new job. If I don’t get it I will speak to acas or cab or something about pay as being an apprentice wasn’t clear until after I had started

A level not a love

Go for the new job it sounds perfect.

Many people only last a short while in new jobs especially when they are not what they appear to be at interview.

I have done this once at a much higher salary and not for money but because the job was like a junior position using none of my skills, I was applying for jobs before my first pay day.

TheFifthKey · 20/10/2018 08:17

That’s bizarre - GCSE and A-level absolutely are equivalents, just at level 2/3 instead of level 1. And you’d get a vanishingly small I take of people who’d even sat a level 1 maths qualification anyway so it’s a stupid requirement to have level 1 as a stand-alone. They’re only done when someone is unable to pass gcse usually.

LIZS · 20/10/2018 08:21

Did they know you were overqualified? Sounds as if the organisation is exploiting the apprentice scheme

ChaosMoon · 20/10/2018 08:24

Go for the job. Probation periods are there for both parties to decide if the role is right for you and it clearly isn't. Plus, as pp said, people move quickly all the time.

Good luck!

schopenhauer · 20/10/2018 08:25

Definitely go for a new job and I think what they are doing may be illegal as they are paying you below min wage for a completely ridiculous reason! As if you need to do a level one functional skills course when you have a level maths!! I would be trying to get out of there fast because they are screaming you over and you need to earn more. Good luck!

Penisbeakerismyfavethread · 20/10/2018 08:27

The opening line of my interview was asking about my MA so I think it’s clear that they knew, I do think they’re exploiting the apprentice scheme an insane amount.

BikeRunSki · 20/10/2018 08:28

Go for the job. Free up your current role for someone else. They might even just be able to contact the other people who applied for your current role, as it is so soon.

PattiStanger · 20/10/2018 08:34

You don't even need to ask, of course your can apply for a better job.

Flashingbeacon · 20/10/2018 08:42

It’s not widely popular but the way I say it is, how long would they wait before replacing you if you dropped dead? They wouldn’t mourn for a day. Even with presidents and kings they are thinking about replacements before the body is cold. Loyalty come at a price and it’s more than they are paying you.

Puggles123 · 20/10/2018 08:47

Go for the new job, these things happen and it’s better to leave when you are still fairly new before you have too much invested in you.

category12 · 20/10/2018 08:53

Of course yanbu.
