To consider quitting my job over this?

We have a vacancy in our team and this week we have finally recruited someone. They start in a couple of months.

This person is a former colleague... they left our organisation vowing would never be back to such a terrible workplace. While they worked with us they were lazy and arrogant, but also managed to behave in a way that made me feel like absolute shit. I was utterly miserable but then they left and all had been well.

Now they’re coming back and I am already coming home in tears everyday at the thought of having them in our team. I’ve spoken to our boss and to colleagues who were here before but they don’t take my concerns seriously. Even my closest work friend tells me “it wasn’t like that, it’ll be different...”

I want to quit over this, but am I just being ridiculously unreasonable?

YANBU to quit a job for any reason that suits you.

Does anyone else in the team feel like this? Perhaps it's worth a group effort to go to hr together and express your concerns? When they do start it may be worth keeping a diary of their behaviour so that you have a case against their probationary period. Unfortunately from experience I don't think there's anything you can do to prevent them from starting, other than by building awareness of the problem once it starts.

Can’t see why they would be welcomed back if they were lazy, arrogant, upset their co-workers and slagged the company off tbh.

Which makes me think there’s more to this...

Thehop · 19/10/2018 22:47

No YANBU

I’d start looking for something else too

krazycatlady · 19/10/2018 22:50

I don't understand why this person would want to come back after slagging company off very odd !!

mumtomaxwell · 19/10/2018 23:04

I don’t understand why they want to come back either! It’s like everyone else has forgotten what was said, including our boss.

Keeping a record makes sense if it starts up again but I don’t know how to that without making myself look bad.

Do you need the job? Id give him a chance rather than quitting before he even gets there.

ileclerc · 19/10/2018 23:30

If they're that bad why are they coming back??

GreenTulips · 19/10/2018 23:32

If you keep records keep them factual not opinion and not based on feelings

CaptSkippy · 19/10/2018 23:36

You don't have to tell anyone you're keeping a record. Just do it and keep your eyes open.

Very similar very nearly happened to me...

The original people who knew... Either had left/had short memories....

I hung around, it was obvious the y would pass their probationary period...

I got stuff sorted and left.... Life is too short to be around toxic people
