Tip the grocery delivery man

I'm so surprised reading some people's comments about this. They move around like 900kg of food Daily, up and down people's stairs and into their homes. Only an ignorant person who doesn't realise/care can be so indifferent in my opinion. I've done £100 pounds worth weekly shop, of course I'll spare £3 on the poor man/woman (they exist) who's job it is to do the dunkey work. Since when do parcels delivered weigh anything like groceries :((

I don’t have any spare cash to tip. I wouldn’t tip even if I did though to be honest. They’re doing the job they are getting paid for.

Gazelda · 19/10/2018 21:00

Wow, it never occurred to me that this is a thing! I always offered delivery drivers an ice pop during the hot summer, but never cash.

BluePigeon · 19/10/2018 21:24

I don't think Boxing Day came from money given to binmen! It was the master of a big house who'd give a box of gifts to the servants, wasn't it

That was a Boxing Day tradition but it's an old custom that possibly dates back to the Middle Ages when the Alms boxes were opened on the feast of St Stephen.

As for tips, I'll happily campaign for higher wages but I don't tip people for doing their jobs. Where does it end? My hairdresser, for example, probably earns 3 times as much as I do.

Amanduh · 19/10/2018 21:38

Not tipping isn’t being entitled. I don’t tip. We have a minimum wage. Unless I tip everyone, it’s not fair. The lowest paid person I know who puts up with the most shit (sometimes literally) I know is a TA, does she get tips? No. Why would I tip a hairdresser on 35k a year etc?

Eliza9917 · 19/10/2018 21:47

No I don't, because they rarely collect our bins. We end up taking them to the dump ourselves.

Katedotness1963 · 19/10/2018 21:51

I tipped the delivery people. They had a long path to wheel it down before getting to the house, then they carried it inside and helped me unpack.

bbcessex · 19/10/2018 21:52

I don’t tip the Tesco guy, simply because it didn’t occur to me. They do lug really heavy stuff around too.

I do tip pizza or takeaway deliveries though , and that’s not half as hard... maybe I should?

Ochayethenoocoo · 19/10/2018 21:52

I don't tip anyone. I give the postwoman a wee present at Christmas and that's about it.
I'll only tip in restaurants if the service is absolutely brilliant.

MakeAHouseAHome · 19/10/2018 21:53

I don't tip anyone. They are already paid for doing their job! Should I add a tip jar to my office desk....Hmm

Truth1981 · 20/10/2018 08:28

This was my original point

I pay for delivery and I always get them to leave it at the door so I take it in myself. No I don't tip them and have no plans to.

If you want to tip them go for it but it doesn't make us non tippers wrong.

jomaIone · 20/10/2018 08:33

I have been a nurse in an emergency department where we are often over run with drunks, very sick people, unexpected emergencies and are more often than not rushed of our feet.

No body ever tips me because it's the job I chose to do! I also would never expect a tip and wouldn't accept one.

I already pay Tesco up to £6 a delivery so why should I give the driver another (insulting imo) £3 for doing the job he's chosen to do??

BatsAreCool · 20/10/2018 08:34

Only an ignorant person who doesn't realise/care can be so indifferent in my opinion.

You could argue that only an ignorant person who likes to feel more important than others would judge someone for not tipping the delivery person.

LostInShoebiz · 20/10/2018 08:35

I’m more likely to tip if they come, leave the shopping and go, no chat whatsoever. But then, the ones near me are known for the sort of chat they direct to 50% of the population, especially if they think they’re home alone.

Sitranced · 20/10/2018 08:38

I'm with Mr Pink when it comes to tipping.

JustDanceAddict · 20/10/2018 08:40

Er, they get a wage! I don’t tip either I’m afraid. Never occurred to me.

WipsGlitter · 20/10/2018 08:42

I give them something at Christmas and hope they pool it!!

My neighbours give the bin men presents too money or a box of beer.

DoYouLikeHueyLewisandTheNews · 20/10/2018 08:46

@DeadCertain thanks for this I didn't know that about Sainsbury's. I don't tip but our delivery chap is great so I'll give them a call.

LuckyAmy1986 · 20/10/2018 08:48

You don’t have a point. And you haven’t answered my question about people scrimping by and not tipping, that just makes them ignorant by your standards?

Oysterbabe · 20/10/2018 08:52

I only tip in restaurants and that's just because I feel obliged.
Lots of people do hard physical jobs and don't get tips.

jay55 · 20/10/2018 08:52

Are delivery drivers for the supermarkets employed by the supermarkets and on wages with benefits (annual leave, sick pay etc) or are they pseudo self employed like Deliveroo drivers?

I don’t tip supermarket delivery as I pay for the delivery and I assume they are employed. If they’re not employed then I will change and tip them, the same I do the takeaway driver.

AgnesNaismith · 20/10/2018 08:53

I tried to tip when we lived in a third floor flat but was told they aren’t allowed to take tips?

KenDoddsDadsDogIsDead · 20/10/2018 08:56

Supermarket delivery drivers earn more per hour than I do.
I do a tough physical job but don't expect our customers to hand over extra cash - in fact I think I would feel a bit patronised if they did.I get paid by my employer to do the job I choose to do - same as they do.
Why don't you just help them carry it all if it bothers you?

Eliza9917 · 20/10/2018 08:56

@LuckyAmy1986 no I don't have my shopping delivered. The one time I did, a long time ago, I think I did.

Alfie19 · 20/10/2018 09:01

I have only had my groceries delivered the odd time, but it has never occurred to me to tip. Nor have they ever “hovered” around as if they were anticipating one. I pay for delivery and they are paid a salary.
