It's a parent and child parking one

Fully prepared to be told IABU, and I wasn't actually affected so I probably am.

Pulled into a supermarket earlier where there was one parent and child parking space left. Just before me, a hatchback pulled into it, half over the dashed lines so I had to park in a regular space, of which there were a few, (hatchback relevant as not a huge 4x4 that wouldn't fit in a space). Regular spaces weren't too bad to be fair so although to get pram and ds our in car seat I had to be mindful and careful with doors and wait for the car next to me to get in out etc I was able to manage.

The car that had parked in the last space was occupied by a mother, a teenage girl and a boy of 5 or six in a school uniform (well behaved).

AIBU to think that if you have children of an age where they do not require equipment to be out and about then you don't need to take the last parent and child space? Also that the spaces are massive and there's no reason to park half in, half over the lines?

Like I say, it didn't actually affect my day much, but things like this irrationally annoy me. Totally aware it's a first world problem and that I must not have enough to worry about.

She had a child with her, so I don't see the issue. It does sound like she was a bit pushy, though.

Everyone saying there kids open the doors and risk hitting other cars- maybe put the child safety locks on the door. That way you open the door from the outside and don’t have to worry about it. It’s also better in case a gust of wind catches the door and pulls it out of the kids hand. I actually don’t bother much with child and parent bays unless there’s loads free. My child is nearly five but I don’t think she is ready to be safely opening the door herself. I’m happy to get in the back seat and do the belt up from inside the door if I can’t lean over to do it.

I have a 7 year old and a 3 year old and try to use mother and child spaces. But I admit I will still use them when I just have DS who is 7. Why? Because 7 isn’t exactly old and DS has got the awful habit of climbing into the front and swinging the passenger door open.

5 or 6 is still quite young imo.

But I do understand your frustration. But you may find you still use these spaces in a few years 😊

I try park on an end space if there’s no parent and child.

Once I spotted a mother with a teenager about 15 pull up and get out. Infuriating!
