Pain. Backstory - suffered with Sciatica for years. MRI showed a small cyst which hasn't really changed in 10 years. Saw consultant 2 months ago. Told hem.about ( new) pains in thighs. Says not related to back and to see gp for painkillers.
Basically he said only to go back to him if I get loss of feeling/ bowel or bladder problems. Last few weeks been having different pains in arms ( painful just lifting them, made cuppa and hurts even more ), plus pains in hips and legs.
Seen GP today who wants blood test for aneamia ( told him I'm already taking iron tablets as feeling tired ) and to go to A&E immediately if any loss of feelimg or numbness in groin.
AIBU in expecting more tests / investigation to be done?
Ive been googling my symptoms ( I know I shouldn't ) and am but worried now.
Thoughts? I'm 48 btw non smoker

Is it actual pain, or more like stiffness? Could it be polymyalgia rheumatica? This can be successfully treated with a course of steroids.

Thecontstant- thanks for the reply. I don't think it's that. ( Have googled it). Have a nice weekend

I am no expert but have a friend who experienced the numbness etc they are worried about. It is to do with spinal compression so I would guess they are highlighting that if the cyst has grown and compresses the spinal cord that is a medical emergency (because if not treated straight away it can cause long term damage).

My understanding is that nerves can’t work ‘backwards’ so something happening in your lower back would not cause problems in your arms or anywhere further towards your brain from the injury. (Again, not an expert at all.)

Did you have another MRI at your last apppintment to check the cyst?

If the cyst has been stable and your consultant is not worried then I’d be tempted to go down the gp route and assume your new pain is something new. If not iron maybe low vitamin d or a thyroid thing? Try not to worry, go for the blood test and take it from there.

Google 'fibromyalgia' and see if your symptoms fit.

Have you been moving furniture? Doing a lot of gardening? Or some other heavy activity?

Iamtheoneandonly2018 · 20/10/2018 12:51

Not doing anything strenuous. Am always worried about buying my back further. Had f.u MRI with consultant- cyst changed shape but no concerns - GP just co.firmed its nothing to do with cyst and wants a blood test

Have you had your Vitamins D and B12 levels checked? B12 deficiency in particular causes nerve pain and might be what your dr is considering as it can cause a different type of anaemia unrelated to iron levels. Anaemia isn't always present though, so if your B12 level comes back under 200 (even if the lab range is lower) and you have symptoms, then you should be treated with B12 injections

It could be muscular OP. I had something similar-sounding after I was thrown out of my seat on a bus when it did an emergency stop. I was ok initially and after a few days, it started getting worse and worse. What solved it was several sports/deep tissue massages. (Not the type of relaxing massage you get at a spa). See what the blood test results are and if nothing comes up, perhaps try a sports massage.

Kingsley- I'll ask about b12 at my blood test next week.
Green- yes- I had a sports massage a few months ago for my back pain- not sure if it will help my arm pain?

I think you should ask for the tests to include a full blood count. Especially if, I’m adfition to bone/joint pain and fatigue, you are also having hot flushes, or shortness of breath, of recurrent infections which take a long time to shift, or you bruise more easily.

greencatbluecat · 20/10/2018 20:05

Yes, a sports massage can help with arm pain if it is muscular or even caused by a pinch nerve (arm pain could be due to s pinched nerve in your neck area).

Similarly: I had terrible leg pain a few months ago which both I and fracture clinic doctor thought it was a fracture! (I've had a fracture on the same place before). It was actually caused by a muscle in my back pressing on one of the nerves that goes down the leg. The massage released the back muscles and my leg was instantly better.

Ivamp. Am.not having any of the symptoms you describe.

Green - interesting that it helps with arm.pain - will look into that- ta
