About working from home

I am working from home today. This requires me to be logged into my work phone and be available to take calls as if I was in the office.

Husband has just text me to ask if I can go and pick our children up from the childminders (husband is self employed, works about 45 minute drive away and normally finishes work at 3 in time to pick the kids up at 4). He says he is held up and as I am not at work it will only take ten minutes.

Our two children attend different childminders both about a ten minute drive away. By the time I get in the car, pick both of them up get them into car seats and home this will probably take around 30 minutes.

I have said no, I can't just stop work to pick them up one because I'm not allowed to just leave work regardless of whether I'm in the office and two because I have work to do. In addition to this he won't be home when I get home with the kids which will prevent me from working properly until he gets home- children are pre school aged and infant school aged and taking phone calls is an essential park of my job.

He says iabu because I'm not "at work" I say he is unreasonable because although I'm not at my office I am still "at work"

Who is unreasonable?

He is not bloody stuck he is chancing it as he sees it as not working and he wants to stay late with his mate for a gas, as it is not necessary.

YANBU at all - stick to your guns. Tell him you can't as you have some fixed appts if he asks. Make sure door shut when he and kids come in so they can't disrupt you as I know my DH wld send them in to make a point...

IStandWithPosie · 18/10/2018 15:51

He’s not stuck bonfires, he just wants to stay later at work.

Eliza9917 · 18/10/2018 15:51

He's not stuck though @Bonfires, he's taking the piss because OP is at home.

OpinionCat · 18/10/2018 15:55

did you take a lunch break? if yes i'd say no, he is wrong. If you didn't take one then I would think it would be fine to pop out for 30 mins.

BonfiresOfInsanity · 18/10/2018 15:55

Did I miss that bit? I didn't see anything that said that?

Mysweowgp · 18/10/2018 15:59

Yep I had already taken a lunch break-otherwise I probably would have however this wouldn't resolve the issue of then being home with the children as I wouldn't be able to work properly for the rest of the day- meaning I'd effectively be taking 1.5 hours out which is longer than my allocated lunch break

It’s quite funny though that you have spent the last hour on a forum moaning about it as opposed to working...

Mysweowgp · 18/10/2018 16:34

@copercabana I can make phone calls and type on Mumsnet symaltaneously. The point is I can't leave the house

I think its a bit of both but tbh if I were you I would have gone and got them. I WFH at times and for me its about flexible working (obvs may be different for your job). If I normally work 8-4 but want to do my weekly shop when its quiet I go at 'lunch' and finish 'work' at 4:30 instead. You can scoop them up within 30 mins, explain if you miss a call that you had a childcare problem and catch up when you're back.

If you were in a jam and called your husband for help and he point blank refused you'd probably be pissed off. Its not a reflection of him not taking your job seriously its both of you balancing work and home which is hard

ReanimatedSGB · 17/04/2019 10:29

How much form has he got for just expecting you to pick up the slack when he wants to do something other than childcare? Does he insist on having hobbies/a social life that cannot be interrupted, as well? Is it always you who has to take time off when DC are ill?

TeaStory · 17/04/2019 10:36

Well I hope the kids aren’t still waiting to be picked up six months later 🙄

ZOMBIE!

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 17/04/2019 10:39

When I worked from home exdp and the dc knew I was working. Never had a problem with them.

My mother and father on the other hand ‘can you take me to the hospital tomorrow because you are not in work and then I don’t have to park the car?’ They did not grasp the fact that when I worked from home I WORKED. Sorry for shouting, but God it used to annoy me!

OP your dh is being a dick.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 17/04/2019 10:39

Oh bloody hell. Why do people resurrect😡

AnnieMay100 · 17/04/2019 10:42

He’s BU you are at work too. If he can’t collect them as he usually would then he needs to make other arrangements for them to be picked up.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 17/04/2019 10:42

Poor kids, waiting all that time for one parent to give in and collect them!

But the perfect place to leave this

AnnieMay100 · 17/04/2019 10:43

Oops didn’t realise it was an old post Blush
