To wonder how the actual fuck to stop my son?!

My 11 month old (the size of a tiny 6 month old), has just climbed out of his cot and fallen!

What am I suppose to do?! He doesn't usually go in there, only with a few toys whilst I get some bits done upstairs. We co-sleep at night, thank goodness.

What am I suppose to do now? We were thinking of a transition to his cot after age 1 but not sure now

He's screamed but he seems fine, just pissed off as usual to be anywhere but joint at the hip with me.

Scary stuff. How am I suppose to stop him?

DS1 was a climber. I figured I just had to make the climbing as safe as possible so I lowered the side and put pillows down for a soft landing. First time he climbed out (he was well short of 12 months) and just appeared in the living room of our flat, it really freaked me out.

He also once appeared in his high chair when I'd left him playing with toys in the kitchen diner while I faffed at the sink. I turned around and thought, "Am I going crazy here?"

The next day I spotted him climb onto the kitchen chair, crawl across the table, over the gap onto the tray of his high chair and manoeuvre himself into the seat.

Someone at playgroup's baby climbed up the chimney in their fireplace though, while his Grandad nodded off in the chair.

I had a cot refuser, we were on a small double mattress on his floor from about 11 months and then a bed from 20 months. Just make sure you anchor any drawers in the room and maybe a video monitor at first

neveradullmoment99 · 16/10/2018 16:54

Well, put him in a toddler bed and get a stairgate for his bedroom. That's what we did.

Jeanclaudejackety · 16/10/2018 16:54

They're like houdinis. Everyone's mid has done it at some point don't worry. Get a baby cage /play pen

OutPinked · 16/10/2018 16:56

Grobag stopped mine doing it for a short while, till they learned how to undo the poppers...

It may be time to transition to a low cot bed with sides on and get a baby gate for his room, I had to do that with mine.

neveradullmoment99 · 16/10/2018 16:57

It took ages before they worked out how to get out! It gave great piece of mind for a while at least. We made her bedroom baby safe. It was just like a huge playpen. Its not worth the risk leaving your baby in a cot incase he hurts himself. Of course he may climb over a gate but ours never did. It was harder to climb over as it was taller.

TwllBach · 16/10/2018 16:57

My DS was a climber. Didn’t crawl till he was 9 months, didn’t walk until he was 14 months, but learnt to climb basically everything. I used to put the remote control on the mantelpiece and one day I turned round to find DS had climbed on top of the woodburber to get hold of it!!

SistersOfPercy · 16/10/2018 16:58

DD did it on her first birthday. She was like some small cute cross between Spiderman and Houdini.
We bought a toddler bed, baby proofed the room and put a gate on which held her for a bit.

FlibbertyGiblets · 16/10/2018 17:02

Lid for a cot made me laugh Grin

AlphaBravo · 16/10/2018 17:02

Summer Infant Popup Playpen. It saved my sanity!! And much deeper than a cot.

PerspicaciaTick · 16/10/2018 17:03

My DS crashed out of his cot one night.
He did it again the next night.
By the third night he was in a toddler bed.

Yura · 16/10/2018 17:05

Both of mine could climb over stairgates at well under 12 months (and open carseat and seatbelts). Some kids are escape artists. we slept on the floor, put bells on doors (to hear them if they mived them), used s carrier instead of a buggy and avoided the car at all costs. it gets better as they get older!

Yura · 16/10/2018 17:07

Growbags slowed them down a couple of seconds , but were no real obstacle for them (we‘ve tried loads)

Jjbay · 16/10/2018 17:09

I caught my daughter doing this after she had previously fallen out wondered for days how she did it... until I caught her half way through she piled up her blankets stood on them and used her arm strength to get over.. she was 9 coming on 10 months at the time tho lucky she has given up trying and has only actually fallen out once... I really hope I haven’t spoken too soon tho..😳

legocardsagain · 16/10/2018 18:11

We moved DS in to a toddler bed as soon as he started trying to cock one leg over the top.

ToffeePennie · 16/10/2018 18:19

I can’t offer anything constructive but you are not alone. My 11 month old can undo his car seat straps no matter how tight they are done up. Scary at 70mph on the m6 motorway.

Oysterbabe · 16/10/2018 18:22

Get a lid.

Witchend · 16/10/2018 18:23

Mattress on the floor. I had a D's who learnt to climb out at 7 months wearing a sleeping bag.

winterisstillcoming · 16/10/2018 18:29

Low toddler bed or mattress I'm afraid. Mine did the same. He scaled his wardrobe at 18months. He just needs a tail and he'd be a monkey.

youarenotkiddingme · 16/10/2018 18:31

Second having mattress on floor and use a dog gate instead of a stair gate.

My ds couldn't open gates (problems with hands) but could make 'stairs' using toy boxes and climb over Hmm

Dontfeellikeamillenial · 17/10/2018 12:52

Does he have a duvet? He probably bunched that up and scaled it....

buscaution · 17/10/2018 12:57

The dog crate is a joke right?

OP, it's probably just time for a bed.

Funnyface1 · 17/10/2018 13:23

Type "cot tent" into eBay. It's like a pop up, breathable tent that they can see out of, means they can stand up but can't climb out.
