To think it's important to let a supermarket know their product was mislabelled?

(I'll try and keep it brief but am a bit grrrr about this!)

I bought some 'Syrup' puddings from Tesco (two pack ones you microwave then turn out 'upside down') - but they weren't syrup, they were strawberry....checked the ingredients etc but were definitely not supposed to contain that ingredient, so a packaging error)

I e-mailed them straight away to let them know (A friend of mine has an allergy to Strawberry) as I thought it may be important (If I hadn't had turned them out I wouldn't have known), but they really couldn't have cared less, and infact made a joke how it must have been 'a shock' to get a 'surprise' ingredient....!? I said it certainly would have been a 'shock' if I'd have had an allergic reaction to said 'surprise' ingredient....

Anyway, after a few more e-mails they asked me to send some pictures of the packaging so they could let their packaging department know, then issued what they called a 'good will gesture' of £1.90 (the cost of the incorrect product we didn't consume) and said they wouldn't be recalling the product....they were actually quite rude in their responses, not a 'thank you for informing us or an apology'...?

AIBU to be a bit pissed off they didn't take this slightly more seriously?

What @Biancadelriosback said.
What if someone was allergic to strawberries? Possible, as that's a pretty common allergen.
Do you have Twitter? It'll get loads of attention on there and you'll get more of a response as it calls them out in public.
Picture of it up there, concise tweet stating the problem, people will be interested in that.

ButtPlugInMyHalloweenHaul · 16/10/2018 08:58

Ochay That is pretty shocking but absolutely believable. It's normal to cash up in the moment in situations like that.

Faster · 16/10/2018 09:03

Thanks for being a good egg OP, DS has a strawberry allergy and I would be mighty pissed off if I’d have found that.

To be fair this was around 10 years ago....so you can hopefully return to your breakfast munchmallow Wink

RiverTam · 16/10/2018 09:15

twice on my local Sainsbury's, bagels from the bakery dept were labelled Plain when they were Cinnamon. The woman at the bakery just shrugged and said they'd run out of the Plain labels. Luckily a till supervisor was horrified so hopefully that won't happen again.

shocking that some people in food prep can be so ignorant.

MaverickSnoopy · 16/10/2018 09:23

Please take this up with Trading Standards/FSA. This sounds like a customer service training issue in that they're not taking it seriously. I would hope that higher up the company they would want to know about this and would recall. They will need a kick to do this though. Seriously, you could save someone's life by pursuing this. I would be make reference to Pret.

Biancadelriosback · 16/10/2018 09:30

As someone with a nut allergy, I always ask if someone contains but before I order at restaurants or cafes etc. At Tesco cafe I asked if a cake contained nuts and the server just shrugged. Didn't even say anything or pretend to look. So I stood there and looked at them until they asked me if there was anything else, so I just repeated my question. She went away and got a manager, I had to repeat for a third time. The manager told me that they possibly contained nuts, would I like one anyways. I mean, I'll "possibly" die if I have one so why the fuck not?! Let's play Russian roulette! Place your bets! Arseholes.

It is the food standards agency you need to contact.
It is not one of the 14 most common allergens, but it looks like it’s a case of the wrong product being packaged. They should withdraw from sale the batch you have purchased and recall any. It won’t make BBC news. But they should put posters at point of sale and at entrances to store.

I would reply saying you’re not looking for compensation, you are looking to be taken seriously and ask for it to be escalated.
If you have Facebook I would post an image of their reply and say it’s not good enough and you would like someone who knows what they are doing to look into it.

The product will be produced for Tesco by a big factory that pushes out lots of own brand goods, it will be them that Tesco need to ask to investigate

MorningsEleven · 16/10/2018 12:02

Should be recalled and investigated. At work we make everything fresh and are very hot on allergy sheets but I still check every day that no one has randomly subbed an ingredient and I double check when I'm in the kitchen that I'm using the right ingredients and I've thoroughly cleaned equipment and benches. There's no such thing as too careful.

MyGuideJools · 16/10/2018 15:35

Tesco piss me off, our local one is awful. I cant count The number of times I've told them about out of date fresh meat on their shelves. They just shrug!
My neighbour took them to small claims court once, something to do with her car being damaged by a Tesco employee whist she was getting petrol, she won her case!
Take it all the way OP that's really dreadful.

MissMisery · 16/10/2018 17:17

I bought some ‘veggie’ samosas from Tesco’s deli counter a while back. Turned out they were lamb. I’ve not eaten meat for 30 years so was pretty appalled.
Emailed them with pics as evidence and I was actually fairly impressed with their response. I had an apology via email, and a phone call a couple of days later offering me a £20 gift card, and they were looking at their processes to make sure it didn’t happen again.
Like PPs have said.. good job it wasn’t an allergy, but at least they seemed genuinely apologetic.
