School put ice on DS's burn

FrogsPornPuddle · 16/10/2018 01:10

DS burnt his arm on a hot Bunsen burner thing today. He went to get first aid and they put ice on it (not even an ice pack -cubes). Its now blistered and a bit sore but not too bad. My first aid training says never to ice burns. AIBU to be a bit Hmm that the school first aider did this?

Ask them why.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 16/10/2018 01:17

At least they didn’t put butter on it😳agree cool water would have been preferable.
Glad he’s ok

FrogsPornPuddle · 16/10/2018 01:18

Surely the only reason could be because they thought it would help (aka they need retraining)?

OP posts:
CoughLaughFart · 16/10/2018 01:20

Then say that to them. Christ alive, what is you WANT?

FloweringOrchid · 16/10/2018 01:22

Is there any need really CoughLaughFart?

agnurse · 16/10/2018 01:24

Ice should NEVER be put on burns because it can freeze the tissue and cause more damage.

I'm shocked that they would do that. I would suggest having a word with the head.

FrogsPornPuddle · 16/10/2018 01:28

Oh, you know, just a chat really, this being a talk forum and all...

OP posts:
CoughLaughFart · 16/10/2018 01:29

Is there any need really CoughLaughFart?

You mean is there any need to respond to a thread? Presumably that’s why the OP pasted it.

Mymomsbetterthanyomom · 16/10/2018 01:29

Is there an actual question here??
All I see is "school put ice on burn"...

Mymomsbetterthanyomom · 16/10/2018 01:31

Are you serious??
They treated his burn!!
It's going to hurt and blister no matter what,it's a BURN.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 16/10/2018 01:32

You could have a word/email about it.
Presumably the 1st aiders are other members of staff, who could be working in any number of roles within the school.
Does sound like they might be a little ‘out of date’

FrogsPornPuddle · 16/10/2018 01:33

No, they didn't treat his burn, they applied a substance that makes burns worse. And the question is, do I make the school/head aware?

What is getting up your noses here? Crikey.

OP posts:
nocoolnamesleft · 16/10/2018 01:33

Fucking hell. Definite no. Lots of running water. Definitely not ice. They need to know that this is wrong treatment, and can actually cause more tissue damage.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 16/10/2018 01:37

I don’t think there’s any need to attack op about this.
Her son had a minor injury which was mishandled, obviously not a tragedy but the correct procedure wasn’t adhered to.
It’s not unreasonable to question the ability of people who are the front line in the case of an accident or injury.
What if it was a much more serious situation ?
Are they competent at CPR?
Could they perform the heimlich manoeuvre?

FrogsPornPuddle · 16/10/2018 01:40

Thank you Ain't, that exactly. What about if its worse next time?

I've literally no idea why my post made people so cross though.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 16/10/2018 01:43

Well Frogs that’s MN for you!

FrogsPornPuddle · 16/10/2018 01:45

Hey ho!

OP posts:
Snitzelvoncrumb · 16/10/2018 01:51

I would question the first aider. Then mention it to the head of school.

CoughLaughFart · 16/10/2018 02:09

Well if you’ve already decided they got it wrong, just complain!

user1493423934 · 16/10/2018 02:10

Wow. When I was at school 25 years ago all the science labs had the poster 'Cool it quick - cold water for at least 10 min' up if anyone burnt themselves. Sounds like the health and safety at your sons school is a bit backwards to be honest.

DistanceCall · 16/10/2018 02:11

Don’t use ice, ice water or even very cold water. According to Dr. Carrick, severe burns shouldn’t be treated with ice or ice water because this can further damage the tissue. The best thing to do is cover the burn with a clean towel or sheet and head to the emergency room as quickly as possible for medical evaluation.

Talk to the school, OP. This is really not on.

DistanceCall · 16/10/2018 02:12

Sorry, that was for severe burns. For minor burns it's:

Apply cool (not cold or ice) water for at least 5 minutes by running water over the burn, soaking it in a water bath or applying a clean, wet towel.
Use a moisturizing lotion, such as aloe vera, once the skin has cooled.
Protect the burn from pressure and friction and cover with a clean, dry cotton dressing.
Relieve pain and swelling with ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
Update your tetanus immunization, as even minor burns can lead to this dangerous bacterial infection.

StrangeAndUnpleasant · 16/10/2018 02:19

I'd definitely say something. If they treat a minor injury in such a poor way how would they deal with a bigger one?
