To think it's absolutely ludicrous that I got refused an xbox gift card sale because DS didn't have ID on him!?!?

DS is actually just turned 13, so he was of age anyway (although I've bought them in the past when he was younger). Went into local supermarket, DS asked if he could bet an xbox card, I said yes. Went to the till, girl on till said to me does he have ID on him. I obviously said excuse me and she said well I can't sell this unless he's 13. I said yes he's 13 and she said but I have to see ID and I obviously go what kind of ID is a 13 year old supposed to be carrying around and she said "I don't know, a passport?" I was horrified, asked to speak to manager who said she has to back up her colleague. AIBU to think this is silly?

Nope, if there's a minimum age then the staff have to check when the customer could be under age. It's unfortunate that your DS didn't have ID but you can't have a go at a shop worker for following the rules.

Being "horrified" and asking to see a manager makes you seem rather entitled.

If a shop worker sells something to someone underage they are personally liable and could be fined.

Surely you could just buy it and show your drivers license if she asked for ID

everpea · 15/10/2018 22:10

I was buying it but she was saying because she knew it was for him...

On this occasion YANBU proxy sales (buying on behalf of someone) are allowed for video games as long as the person paying it old enough. She should only refuse a proxy sale for alcohol and tobacco products.

Amanduh · 15/10/2018 22:46

Yes, proxy sales are legally allowed on games and dvds but most stores ans current guidance is that companies adopt a common approach to identifying and preventing proxy sales across ALL age restricted products. It is probably their guidelines.

At most stores, once you are challenged for ID, you have to present it to buy the item. The manager can't override that decision.
