Using your face to check if meat is done

I've just googled how to properly cook a duck breast, and found this gem - from the Gressingham Duck Company website no less! Has anybody checked if their duck - or steak - is cooked by comparing the heat to different areas of your face?!

It says to compare the feel not the heat lol. Otherwise it would be nonsense as my cheeks feel the hottest.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 15/10/2018 20:44

Grin I just use a meat thermometer

ShagMeRiggins · 15/10/2018 20:45

It’s not a comparison of heat, but of tenderness. It’s how it feels when pressed.

hidinginthenightgarden · 15/10/2018 20:45

Have you really never heard of this before?
I have heard of using various areas of the palm of your hand. Not really any different to this. It isn't like they are telling you to put in ON your face.

CoquetteRegret · 15/10/2018 20:46

I.e. Cheeks squidgy, chin less squidgy, forehead hard. I did initially read it and think the same tho.

Thebeautifullisette · 15/10/2018 20:46

My cheeks and my chin feel exactly the same as far as I can tell Confused

Is there something wrong with me? Are my cheeks too hard, or is my chin too soft?

FelicisWolf · 15/10/2018 20:48

Oh!! Grin That makes a lot more sense... but no, I hadn't heard of that before either! You know what they say, you learn a new thing every day. And no, I didn't think they were telling me to put the duck on my face, I just thought it was funny!

Also, if a duck breast felt like my forehead there’s no way I’d want to eat it overdone

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 15/10/2018 20:50

the hand thing is for rare, medium and well done

put your thumb and forefinger/or middle finger/or pinkie together in a circle and with the other hand feel the squishy bit at the base of your thumb, it'll be soft/or bouncy/or hard and that corresponds to how your slab of meat should feel

I was taught this and the hand method by a chef when I was waitressing years ago. DH still doesn't know how I cook steaks to order for guests at different levels without a meat thermometer, he thinks it's magic, mind you he can burn frozen pizza 😁

Glumglowworm · 15/10/2018 21:13

Is everyone else prodding the different parts of their face now?

Reccy2018 · 15/10/2018 21:15

Cheek is the flabby bit, not the cheek bone I assume!
I also use the hand method!

HemanOrSheRa · 15/10/2018 21:18

What if you have a really fat face? Which chin?

Prestonsflowers · 15/10/2018 21:20

Glumgloworm
Yes, I am prodding my face and my hand😂

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/10/2018 21:24

The only way meat comes near my face is when I shove it in my mouth . . .

Bobaboutwhat · 15/10/2018 21:26

ExpressoButler should’ve had a wee before I read that! 🤣
