I started a new job 6 months ago. I was interviewed by the office manager, my manager and a director. It was casually alluded to that everyone pitches in with taking calls etc.
On my first day, it became apparent that while doing your job, they also have this 'virtual' reception which is where your phone rings every time a reception phone in any of the offices nationally rings. You are expected to take some of these calls.
I can not describe the stress of being in the middle of something and having to answer reception calls.
Ok, so I got used to that and accepted it.
Last week, we had an admin meeting and we were told that we now have to do the following as well:

  1. Offer to do incoming/outcoming post when receptionist is on leave
  2. Listen out for the doorbell ringing and answer the door if no-one is at the 4 desks behind reception. I sit about 30 seconds walk from the reception door.
  3. Make teas and coffees for meetings in the absence of the receptionist.

I have 22 years administrative experience and am supposed to be a Team Administrator for a team of 5 building surveyors. I also have PA duties for my Director.

Would any of you do this? I have handed in my notice to my manager by text and have rang HR and am waiting to hear back.

FFS, they are paying me 28k to answer phones and make tea?

Am I the unreasonable one given that NONE of this was indicated in the interview and is not on my job description?

You start off junior and making tea is part of your job description. At 40, I don't want to be making tea for anyone.

I'm 40 years old, I'm not making tea. It's not in my job description. It's shit at any age. Why can't everyone make their own fucking tea. I could see me leaving my job if I was expected to make tea. Fuck that shit.

I'm better employed using my brain rather than my amazing tea making skills. I have no desire to make tea. I did not apply for a job making tea. I applied for a senior administrative role.

I ain't making nobody no tea!

Well when you interview for your next job best give them a list of the things that are beneath you before your start.

This is not making tea for your colleague. This is making tea for a meeting and walking in bearing sandwiches and tea and coffee for a meeting. I ain't doing that!
Embarrassingly, my manager makes me coffee :( He has the pods for the coffee machine and foams the milk and brings me back proper coffees. And now I'm abandoning him. It's really not his fault. He has no input into the admin shit. Bless him.

Now that I've officially resigned, I feel really sorry for my team. And my manager in particular. But I have haphazardly, gently alluded to this for months and he just didn't pick up on it.

I'm a nurse on the same wage as you OP, I do all that you do above plus much, much more. Including wiping bottoms. I don't see any job as beneath me

Mind you, I think some of the people posting on here would if the boss told them to. So much subservience!

God almighty, if there are 3 of you in the office, then yes, whoever is near the door answers. But when there are 450 and you were employed in what you thought was a senior role.....well no... you don't get up to answer the door when you're a mile away from it.

The OP isn't a receptionist, she doesn't make tea.

The OP a senior admin person doesn't want to answer the phone all the time, should her boss? Should the MD of the company? No because it's not their job it's beneath them.

I don't mind doing a bit of phone answering and making the odd cup of tea but if someone told me I had to do I would complain.

This attitude that you need to be never endingly polite and take on any task because they pay you is nonsense.

Why is 'beneath you' so shocking? I would make a cup of tea for a colleague but if someone asked me to make tea/coffee for a meeting and then carry it in I would tell them to fuck right off.

Fairly typical administrative duty in my workplace; data entry, filing, copying, tea making, reception cover.

Who do you think should make the tea?

If your argument is that it doesn’t fall within an administrator’s job description then surely the same can be said for a receptionist.

There's another woman who started after me and she ONLY answers the calls from directors lol. It's hilarious to watch. The phone can ring ring ring ring ring fucking ring and she won't answer, the minute she sees Jimmy BigBalls ringing, she's on it like a hot snot.
